When someone casts locate helm it lists every crap helm making you scroll through a crazy amount of things trying to find the one you want, how about 'highlighting or coloring' the rares when listing objects that have been located. OR putting a little colored [R] symbol before the item name.
We already encourage newer players to play questing/searching class/race combos. Like healers and clerics. We literally encourage them to explore. And btw I learnt about 60% of the lands on my first couple of characters. 60% doesnt sound like much but its a hell of a lot.
How would this idea not be helpful? The equipment in the game is designed to signify rare and uniques are greater in value than commons. As is.......every single game ever made? When you get to a place where you are semi comfortable with the lay out of the game, finding and identifying rares/uniques is another major enjoyment. In fact, it is still something that gives me great pleasure. When I see a new item on someone else, I begin exploring to find it.
Now, what I really want to know, is why do we have people bashing ideas at all? The point of this section of the forum is to generate ideas and create discussion to enhance the suggested idea. I don't think it's constructive to come on here and blast an idea, or a player, for having an idea. At the very least, support your reason(s) for why the idea shouldn't be implemented.
And foxx, unless you have identified or lored an item already, the items in this game are not built consistently over the courses of one builder to the next. I have ran into countless objects that do not locate via obvious code words, and one of the only ways to see if they are available is by locating 'helm', or other various names that give tremendous lists.
I am questioning the usefulness of the idea. When we have a coder that codes out of good will with limited time on his hands, we, as a playerbase, must make sure his time goes on things that will improve the game.
I personally do not see how this will improve the game, in any way, ESPECIALLY for new players.
Newbies will get better by wanting to learn and talking to vets.
Whatever you code for them, they won't get better if they don't want to learn. And if they want to learn, they will get better no matter what.
The only thing that stops them from getting better is vets who don't want to share the information.
As for the suggestion itself, here is a list of nice HELMS that you will not get by casting "locate helm":
crown of might
horns of cthulhu
Imbessar's circlet
Glyph of ancient darkness (you can't locate this anyway, but if you could, it would locate with the word "helm")
Blazing Halo
circlet of rylsilesti
I am all for implementing stuff that helps new players, but I don't see how this will be useful in any way. For anyone.
[edit] See Mya's idea? Now that WILL help newbies, even though the thing that will help them most is actually talking to other players.

If im a low level char all im gonna see is common stuff, as I rank higher im going to start seeing rare and unique equipment
popping into the picture. This will make me start looking for these rare and unique equipments because now I know they exist!
The example I posted above helps experienced playes 'scan the crap' while allowing new players to sort out what they probably
should be looking for along the lines of equipment.
Its a 30 second code insert that in my opinion would enhance the game with no drawbacks.
If locate object is checked against spell level, the lowbies shouldn't see some of the higher leveled items anyway. In the above example, a L30 BMG shouldn't see the Helm of Spell-Turning. If they do, perhaps add a check?
All the classes I'm aware of that get locate object don't get it til 15th, so they'll be fine to see the flag should any rare items be about 15th level.
