WagesofSin
Time and time again I find that some players will blatantly say things like how much Exp to level they have or any other exact number that is completely OOC. How do you guys deal with someone who just won't stay in character? I usually just don't respond, I pretend I didn't hear what they say. Not sure if there is a better way though..... elfdude
Usually rp that I don't understand them, if I can tell they are a complete newb then I will either tell them that FL is rp enforced or if there is an imm on I will pray to ask them (nicely!) to help them out. Deykari
I try to explain to them in IC methods if possible, and if not, I will pray. I always feel a bit dodgy when it comes to quickly breaking character to inform someone that they are being blatently OOC, so I tried to come up with a few ways to talk about the OOC stuff whilst being as IC as possible: Refer to helpfiles as the 'help scrolls' or something a bit more creative that fits. You can always have some sort of story, like the scrolls were written by Bob Jackson, the moronic Saint, who decided to infuse them into the sky for all to read (not that one obviously, but you get what I mean). That way you can point helpfiles to people. If someone wants help with a command, you could use emphasis: Jack says, "Hey, how do I mount this horse?" Jill says, "Just grab the reigns and MOUNT it." Jack says, "Hey, how do I get my pets to rescue me?" Jill says quietly, "Just use your mind and order all of your pets to rescue yourself" and she places emphasis on the words 'order all rescue self'. Things like that might be considered a bit borderline OOC/IC but it's sure better than blatently going OOC to tell them what's wrong and what's right when an Immortal can't help. Iusedtobesomebody
i always stay in character, while being as informative as possible. there ways to phrase 'just' about every in-game command. the 'emphasis' method, well, i always thought that was like yelling at a hard-of-hearing person. just because you're loud, doesn't mean they understand you. be creative in your descriptions and directions. it might take a world of effort on your part, but the impact you have on the newer person can be invaluble. Mudder
Like everyone else, I try to remain as IC as possible. My favorite thing to say is "Read the scrolls entitled "Help " Though sometimes there is no way to help other than to go OOC, in that case, I go OOC for a brief moment to help them out. In tells, only. Though show by example about staying IC. As I still RP with them, while i'm helping. And for some reason I can't think of a time where I had to go OOC, but I know there was.. Aw well. But yeah, if some retart who isn't a newb in my group goes OOC. I'm just like "huh?" and I usually make fun of them depending on their race/class compared to mine. If they're an ogre and i'm a smarter person, i'll say things like "You ogres say the oddest things"
MeleeCrazy
I don't think going "out of character" to explain to a newb that he is going "out of character" is very helpful at all, However I do wonder at what ranks this is happening, usually if someone helpful catches the mistake while the newb is still fresh to the game the newbie chat can clear things up. I've honestly never had it happen when I couldn't use the newbie channel to help them oout.
WarriorCleric
Eh, if it's pretty bad, I'll send a prayer up just saying something like; 'this guy is really new and may need some help with rp' Otherwise I just treat it like I know what they person is saying... because I know what he is saying, but I maintain in character. New Guy: 4k tnl Me: Yes, proof of twelve or so more rangers and my guild may recognize me for advancement aswell. WC
goldbond
almost %100 of the time they arent noobs. at least they arent noobs to MUDding. theyre basically testing the waters of OOC. one time, a dwarf warrior somehow pinnacled without initial MUD knowledge of even the basic kind. he was probably some dude that just learned fast and followed instructions, yet he died constantly and asked OOC questions habitually. this is the exception to the rule and it happens very very rarely. most of the time if you see a grouptell "i have 5655 tnl and i learn flamestrike" or anything remotely similar to this, it's a MUDder who's played plenty of MUDs and wants to see how corruptible the RP environment is. not because he's an evil genuis. but, simply because he is lazy and would like you to be lazy too. this is the guy to be multikilled and ushed right out.
