Deykari
...of having your computer break twice in a period of a few months thanks to rogue lightning bolts? Hasn't worked in a couple of days and apparently there was another big storm whilst I was away that struck the house. Again. Seriously. I had a storm-surge protector and everything. (Although everything was plugged into it apart from the power cord to the PC itself, anyway). Dey
elfdude
uhhh.. that could be the problem. maybe next time you should plug the most important thing into the surge protector, just an idea.

Warpnow
Best deal I could find for a good UPS. http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1700015&CatId=233 Its so worth it. Edit: This one is cheaper, but reviews are terrible.(Edit: Plus its consideribly less power) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16842106111&CMP=OTC-pr1c3watch&ATT=42-106-
Deykari
I'll bear that in mind. Thanks, Warpnow. Gonna buy myself a really rubbish PC for like £80 that can MUD and play music. That's all I use my PCs for anyway. Although with a system like that I'll probably be reduced to Windows 98. Thing is though, I was expecting some sort of corny tagline when I saw "Tiger Direct". I mean, any advertising wizard worth their salt could have come up with something better than "Buy Today - Ships today" (I'm sure that's not their motto but so what?) that plays on the word 'tiger'. Oh, and the funny thing is, that out of all of the pdeaths I have ever taken, none of them have ever been to Pali. I know that, because Pali's characters are usually pretty easy to spot (following the Town Crier or the Val Miran-Rheydin Caravan, or even stood near one of many EQ-pits for lengthy periods of time). Warpnow
Requirements for Windows xp: PC with 300 megahertz or higher processor clock speed recommended; 233 MHz minimum required (single or dual processor system);* Intel Pentium/Celeron family, or AMD K6/Athlon/Duron family, or compatible processor recommended • 128 megabytes (MB) of RAM or higher recommended (64 MB minimum supported; may limit performance and some features) • 1.5 gigabytes (GB) of available hard disk space* • Super VGA (800 x 600) or higher-resolution video adapter and monitor • CD-ROM or DVD drive • Keyboard and Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1897546&CatId=6 99.99- Should be able to run windows xp fine... EDIT: My brother bought a laptop from tigerdirect and after about a year the hingre for the screen broke and they just gave him a gift certificate for the price of his laptop, so now he gets a better, more up-to-date one. Wait...is every component of your Pc broken? Probably just the power and motherboard... You could salvage the RAM, HD, Cd-ROM and maybe even the CPU and just put them into a barebone machine...alot cheaper and you'd get a better pc. Just find a board that takes the same RAM and buy a barebone kit.
Crypticant
Actually, it is probably just the power supply, since most power supplies have a built-in fuse. You can get a new power supply for 30-40 bucks. I'd try that route.
Warpnow
500w for $14.00 http://www.pcimicro.com/.sc/ms/dd/1121281410616664/9/nc/Power%20Supply--Hercules/4294/Hercules%20500W%20ATX%20Power%20Supply%20Bulk%20Pack There's a chance other things are ruined, but for $14.00 you take the shot. Deykari
Last time it happened it was the power supply, and I had to replace it. This time, the system switches on, powers up, but doesn't boot up (black screen, continual long beeps with a couple of seconds in between each beep). The actual system is really old anyway. And as for the minimum requirements for XP, I've learnt to never trust minimum requirements for anything. My last PC was around 1ghz, 256mb ram, 128mb graphics card, and things would be a little sluggish. I can't imagine how bad it would be at 300mhz. It's strange really, because I've had three 'store-bought' new PCs and one custom-built, and none of them have ever performed as well as I'd expect. By a long run. Warpnow
You could still buy a barebones and salvage the usable parts. Its probably(in my limited experience) the motherboard. Salvage the RAM, CD-ROM, HD at least. Buy a barebone with a case, MB and CPU, then put all your old things inside. *shrug* I'm very cheap, that's why I build my own PCs, not because of quality, but because I'm one cheap SOB. I'm just as cheap. I decided to learn a little bit about computer hardware a little while ago (emphasis on the "little bit") so I knew enough to be able to build my own PC cheaper than buying for one of those over-priced stores. I don't want a fancy-dangly PC, I want something I can MUD and play music with. But I think I'm just cursed. I've never had a PC that has peformed to what you'd expect it to yet. That, and the fact that I can never seem to recall. Dey
Fiere
Tell me about it. I'll be at school, and need to go home. mya
Get a friend who know about PC hardware to help you out. My area got hit by a bolt and i lost: 1 router 1 modem 1 network card because the flaming bold came by the telephone line. Even cable can fry with bolts. My friend lost his modem and network card. I lost little because turned my pc off, but my dad did not and got fryed. My friend got a bolt in the neibours chiimney and he lost half his hardware in his pharmacy (four PC's + other stuff). And remenber to connect the moden to the UPS. And keep old pcs for spare parts. I got lots of junk in the basement from old dinosaurs. PS: XP need 500 Megabites of ram or else it turtles up. Get WIn 98. or more ram.
Deykari
That happened before, last time we were hit by a bolt we lost both our Sky Digital Boxes and my modem. The phone in my room doesn't work (and it's connected by microfilter to the modem) so I can only assume that the modem is broken too. Didn't know you could connect a modem to UPS too though..mmm. The joys of being a poor eighteen-year old. One week until payday. And that's when I have to start paying my loan back too, to make matters worse. Warpnow
70% of surge related damage comes through the phone line. /\ || How do I know this? Okay, its about time I took a long break from being on the pc Do Not think you don't have to run your phone line through a surge protector.
