avians

You know it's things like this that should be decided upon. Otherwise we can just arbitrarily make stuff up that lacks internal consistency. Also, I wish the description would elaborate on their physical features. "bird like creatures that resemble humans" is not much of a description and I've seen avians range from humans with wings to giant birds that can talk.

Exactly what Eshaine said. Things like this are purposely vague so you can create your own back story. Where do the giant races come from? Why do the drow and duergars leave the Underdark? Avian, the word, means relating to or derived from birds. So we say, okay, a humanoid form with wings. The rest is up to you.

What's wrong with having several species that qualify as avian, but some lay eggs and some don't?

I personally love the openness of the race descriptions in FL.

my thoughts exactly. i've always seen the races like ferals, avians, and werebeast (the one's i see with the most varied descriptions that *don't* apply for restrings) as having multiple species that exist in the lands.

either differing species or differing levels of taint/blessing(for ferals/werebeast).

Avians are born like humans. They are humans' date=' with bird wings. But the thing that makes this game great is you are your own person. You can be born the way you want.[/quote']

That's silly...

"Avians are born this way in this game."

"This game is great, because avians can be born any way they want."

Yay, paradox! Second one today!;)

IMO (and this is just my opinion), if a race isn't one of the common races that people will already know of the stereoptyical appearance of (Human, Elf, Dwarf etc.), and if the help-files don't explain much, they're open to your own interpretation. Storm Giants. We know they're big and that's about it. So unless you're trying something radically different, you could have a tall, quite slim (muscular by human standards, but slim to giant standards) Storm Giant with pale blue leathery hide. You could have a tall, muscular Storm Giant with hairy black skin and four fingers.

Avians I see as the same. Some sort of humanoid with flying capabilities. You could have just a plain human with wings (feathered wings, or maybe those wings that bees/flies have), maybe a creature that resembles a bird. Wings could be on their back, on their head, etc etc. Could have multiple sets of short wings, one set of large wings with a huge span.

If there's no real definition of these features, use your imagination. Unless you're going for something a little off-the-wall, providing you stick within the realms of what a race should be like to some degree in accordance with their stats (no ten-feet tall halflings with huge rippling bodies and fully functional wings). Although some races are taken from allsorts of traditional fantasy settings, some are a bit more 'generic'. Although many fantasy settings have an 'Avian' or 'Giant' race, I don't think FL's are taken from another fantasy setting, rather just their own version of a Giant or Flying creature. Hope that makes sense; I find it really hard to explain something without circumventing. :P

I've rolled up a few avians, and none of them have been the same. I've had humans with wings - some feathered, some batlike, some insectoid - and I've had birdmen, similar to Aracoix from Shadowbane. I've made harpy-like avians, winged serpent avians, and even tried an angelic type being (which never made it past 15 - that's where I learned about the 'no angel in FL' rule)

None of my chars ever made pinn, and these ones were done during my first attempts at learning the game, so I SERIOUSLY doubt anybody would even recognize the names. The point, however, is this:

Avian means it can fly. Everything else is up to you.
