The Glock 20 is one of the best handguns in the world. The 19 is very similar. They don't jam. Ever. Get 9mm. Ammo is way cheaper, and it's got practically the the same sort of knockdown power (for home defense, robbing liquor stores, etc) as a .45/.357/.38 would. Higher calibers are overrated...mostly because the ammo is so expensive.

While you are correct in saying that the Glock is about the world's most perfect handgun, the 9MM has nowhere near the stopping power it should. Of course, it is also true that while the stopping power of the .45 is unquestioned, its accuracy, or lack thereof, is a major downfall. Thus, my official "god" of Death recommendation is the Glock model 22 .40. Heavier grain round gives it a lot more punch than the 9MM without compromising accuracy or carrying capacity (the Glock .40 is a 10-round mag).

Chayesh likes his model 22 muy mucho. For cheaper standard shooting rounds, I also recommend CCI Blazer .40 180-grain FMJ.

BTW...threatening your comp with a rifle won't make you PK any better.;)

BigMac, I like your photos. Unfortuantly I live in CA where owning a M4A1 is misdemeanor/felony (unless it's been pansied out, or registered for LE use), however driving a Blinged out Hummer while eating a Big Mac and talking on your cellphone as an episode of Futurama plays overhead is very much okay!

As for handguns elfdude, go with a Sig Sauer. They are best auto pistols ever made. I've never heard a negative word towards any Sig firearm. They are simply quality.

But if you wanna be like the Dutch police, go with a Glock. It's not that they are poor shooters, its that they're not so good to carry. Really, it's a safety issue. The first being that once a round is chambered, you are now carrying a cocked gun that only needs five pounds of pull to fire. The so-called safety is on the actual trigger, so if that gets snagged, you are screwed. The second issue is the flight path of ejected shells. They fly right towards the shooters face! Now you know why those thugs hold their guns sideways.

Sig vs. Glock vs. 1911 if your life depended upon it? Which would you choose?

The US Navy Seals, Federal Air Marshalls, and US Secret Service are issued Sigs for a reason.

This is just one opinion, test it against others.

Of course, if you don't have any firearm, stick with the basics first:

Remington 870 Police Magnum shotgun.

Just the sound of a loading round will deter many.

Hey, every country has their guns. Are you in control of yours?

UPDATE:

Actually, in California you can carry concealed weapons in public with a permit. The permit is a bit of a pain, but if you are transporting some serious cash, goods et all, I'd say it's worth looking into. You can also carry concealed at your home, and private business without the permit.

About the Glock issue, from their website:

http://www.glock.com/g21.htm

The trigger pull weight is 5.5 lbs on all of their most popular models.

I also, was not speaking about any so-called safety switch to make a firearm safe, but rather the outright design that makes Sigs superior to Glocks. There is a reason Sigs cost more, and if Glocks were tailored for law enforcement and paramilitary, that's great, but all of the top US agencies use Sigs, to which hi-cap mags can also be obtained by both the public and private sector. I would also challenge anyone that a Sig is more high maintenance than a Glock, that is absurd. Surely, Sigs and even Beretta's have the very lowest of maintenance and field strip ability! That is why the US military uses them.

And about weight: Let's compare.

Sig P220 .45 w/ empty mag: 31.2 oz

Glock 21 .45 w/ empty mag: 29.4 oz

Nothing radical, to rebut any blanket claim. I have owned both Glocks and Sigs of various caliber. I think Glocks are nice shooters, but again, nothing I would want to carry with a chambered round.

You can be a pacificst and still shoot guns. Just because I shoot guns doesn't mean that I'm a violent person. I have some hippy liberal lesbian democrat friends (while I'm the exact opposite) who LOVE to go shooting with me. Hell, I met a handfull of people while barhopping in Europe who loved to shoot guns. It isn't an American thing. It isn't a southern thing. It isn't a redneck thing. It's a hobby.

If I were going to buy a .40 cal handgun, I'd get a H&K USP. Not because it's the starting CT pistol in counter-strike or because Angelina Jolie (!!!) used them in Tomb Raider, but (aside from their top-notch manufacturer, outstanding performance, and German origin) because they're just so sexy looking.

I've got two handguns and one of 'em doesn't even belong to me...it's actually my mom's from when she was a police officer/firearms instructor (she just doesn't shoot anymore). They're both revolvers. a .32 and a .38spl (smith and wesson, baby, and stainless steel! It's sexy).

My two favorite rifles, though, are my M4 (it's SO fun to shoot) and my 1903-A3. I've got two 03A3s. They were my mom's dad's. The 03A3 is the most accurate rifle I've fired. With open sights, I can hit a 2ft square paper target from 800-1000+ yards with three out of five shots. The damn target is just a speck from that far away. The M4 can't hit the broad side of a barn from that far, but it can crank out an absurd amount of rounds per minute...and that's all that matters.

I've also got a sawed off pistol grip pump shotty that holds 6+1. Wooty woot!

Bavarian, if you need 5 lbs. of trigger pull to fire your Glock, it's definitely got something wrong with it. Mine needs about 3. And the rate of fire is ungodly since the firing pin reset only requires about 2 mm of movement. But if safety is your concern, fine, get something that has a safety switch on it. My personal feeling is that if you're relying on your safety switch to make handling a firearm safer, you really shouldn't be messing with one in the first place.

Sigs, while a quality firearm, tend to be heavier, more expensive to purchase and maintain, and a bit high maintenance, IMHO. Glock is tailor made for law enforcement and paramilitary personnel and it's reflected in its sleeker design, lighter weight, high cap mags, and general lack of sexiness over function. I mean, how cool is a weapon where all the magazines of the same caliber can be used interchangeably?

Certain states have concealed carry laws, some don't. In some states you don't need to have a lisence at all, and you can carry at all times. The only states that I can think of that don't allow average citizens at all to carry are california, illinois and a few eastern states.
