Since I am most definately a gun person I'll weigh in with my opinion.

The .45 ACP is unmatched in it's stopping power in an autoloading pistol. Any copy of a 1911 will work, S&W makes a nice .45 also. I've never pulled the trigger on a Glock of any sort so I have no opinion about them. Ammo is cheap, mags are cheap, and if you can't hit something with 8 rounds.....15 won't save you.

9mm is alright if you have a high cap pistol, who needs stopping power when you have 15 rounds right? Wrong, learn to shoot! I like the Beretta 92 best, followed by any Ruger as long as it's a DC. Ammo is cheap, mags are cheap and they are fun to plink with.

.40 and 10mm are right up there with the .45 for power and have more capacity than a 1911 model. Police all over the country have turned to these calibers as the ones they use on a day to day basis. I've shot a .40 and it works for me but I don't own one yet. Don't really know about the ammo/mags issue b/c I don't own one but if you buy in bulk or handload I imagine they won't be to pricey...more than .45 and 9mm probably but not that much more.

If capacity isn't an issue, get a revolver. As long as it isn't a snub nose you will have good accuracy and I prefer a .357 or .44 because you can hunt whitetail with either and be expected to get a clean kill at a reasonable distance. Neither caliber has too much recoil to bother you if you choose the right weapon to fire it through(something with a little weight and barrel length). Ammo is a little more expensive again, but I buy in bulk and save. Speedloaders are worth the cost if you plan on competition shooting, I personnally only have super blackhawk hunters in both calibers so reloading fast isn't an option for me. One bonus in revolvers of these calibers is you can shoot .38's in a .357mag and .44 specials/russians in a .44mag although the shorter bullets will require some extra cleaning of the cylinder and breech.

If you want to shoot and have tons of fun, anything you can find in .22 is far and away the best thing to shoot. Can't kill much with a .22 pistol(maybe squirrels) but they sure tear up cans nice. Ruger makes my favorite, in fact it's the only .22 I've shot except a tiny little pocket revolver one of my friends owns and totes everywhere. You can't hit anything with it past about 5 feet but stick it in someones gut and they'll more than likely leave you alone.

I sold my bushmaster M4 clone about 5 months ago. I hate selling any of my guns but to be honest I didn't really enjoy shooting it that much because even with earplugs it was ridiculously loud.

"Safe? It gun! Gun not safe!" quoted from a german gun smith.

Personaly, I shoot a glock 9mm when I compeat in IDPA competitions. The strongest handgun I've ever fired is a magnum 44 cal. That has some kick to it. As for ammo, by Brother in law reloads his own stuff so its way cheaper, but yeah, the higher the cal, the more expensive the bullet.

Not really. It's more complicated than that. Take rifles for instance..

.243 is more expensive than .308 (aka 7.62 NATO) because fewer .243 rounds are made. It has to do with how much of the ammo is in proudction.

Ammo for my .223 (aka 5.56 NATO) is cheaper than ammo for oh..say.. a .32 caliber pistol not because it's smaller (it actually requires more brass/powder) but because they're manufactured in such high numbers because they're used by the military (not just in the USA, either..in England, Germany, France, Israel).

I bought my M4 partly because of the caliber. I can get ammo for ~$0.12/rd from the sporting goods store, and even cheaper if I go to gun shows, etc.

I'm using an JetStream XL350 at the minute, but I hear the XL450's have a much bigger tank. On the flipside, the new SuperSoaker series has a much bigger range (15 metres), so I'm torn. Do you go for firepower and range (at the cost of having a small tank, so I'd run out of water faster) or go for the huge tank, and play a war of attrition?

What would you recommend? I'm tired of getting beat by the rest of the kids down my street.

personally I hunt with a 3.06(not sure how the abriviation for that is exactly)

The rifle is a Thirty-aught-six...written as .3006.

As to BigMac's comments on the .22 pistol, I concur that the Ruger is the best around. I used to target plink with a MarkVI bull barrel. Loads of fun and a great intro gun.

Also, .357 is a great solid weapon. I recommend S&W just because they are damn hard to beat. Fire .38 ammo through it and it will never wear out. Have one of those also.

My collector's weapon is a Remington Army Revolver, a black powder .44 Civil War era sidearm. It was the revolver made "famous" by Clint Eastwood in "Pale Rider" and was used by some notorious famous personages throughout history including "Buffalo" Bill Cody. With an aftermarket cylinder, it can also be converted from ball-and-cap revolver to firing .45 long colt black powder cartridges.

T'was not I.

BTW, Belegriel...the M4 is very, VERY loud. I couldn't imagine shooting it in a war enviornment. I'd go deaf. I've got some heavy-duty earmuffs for when I shoot it.

Hahaha...you think the M4 is loud? That's the quietest weapon we got. Just imagine grenades exploding...m249(5.56) saws and m240b's(7.62) rattling off. Then we got the 50 cal and MK 19 Grenade launcher.

You can be a pacificst and still shoot guns. Just because I shoot guns doesn't mean that I'm a violent person. I have some hippy liberal lesbian democrat friends (while I'm the exact opposite) who LOVE to go shooting with me. Hell, I met a handfull of people while barhopping in Europe who loved to shoot guns. It isn't an American thing. It isn't a southern thing. It isn't a redneck thing. It's a hobby.

If I were going to buy a .40 cal handgun, I'd get a H&K USP. Not because it's the starting CT pistol in counter-strike or because Angelina Jolie (!!!) used them in Tomb Raider, but (aside from their top-notch manufacturer, outstanding performance, and German origin) because they're just so sexy looking.

I've got two handguns and one of 'em doesn't even belong to me...it's actually my mom's from when she was a police officer/firearms instructor (she just doesn't shoot anymore). They're both revolvers. a .32 and a .38spl (smith and wesson, baby, and stainless steel! It's sexy).

My two favorite rifles, though, are my M4 (it's SO fun to shoot) and my 1903-A3. I've got two 03A3s. They were my mom's dad's. The 03A3 is the most accurate rifle I've fired. With open sights, I can hit a 2ft square paper target from 800-1000+ yards with three out of five shots. The damn target is just a speck from that far away. The M4 can't hit the broad side of a barn from that far, but it can crank out an absurd amount of rounds per minute...and that's all that matters.

I've also got a sawed off pistol grip pump shotty that holds 6+1. Wooty woot!

I beg to differ on you're assessment of the M4s accuracy. At 350 yards I can put it through a paper sized target every time. It's all about trigger squeeze, breathing, being steady, and sight picture. I suggest taping a quarter to your butt-stock if yer not too scared to put your nose against the charging handle for a consistent sight picture.

The M4 is a very accurate weapon, you're not doing something right.

There is a natural breathing pause when you let out a breath and before you draw in the next, during that pause is when you should be squeezing the trigger because your body isn't moving. Squeeze the trigger, don't jerk or pull or anything like that. Lastly, did you zero it properly? One click up from 3/8, front sight flush with its mount and rear peep in the middle?

And make sure you're firing with the proper sight, large peep below 300 meters, small peep above.

You can also have a friend place a piece of tape on the stock where your cheek rests. I wear glasses and putting my nose on the charging handle just doesn't work. After you get the tape on there, build it up a little or buy the gray sticky stuff(can't remember the name of it) so you'll have a consistent place marked so your sight picture will always be the same.

Another great thing is to take a cleaning rod(whatever size for your weapon) and stick it in the barrel. Have a friend balance a dime on the rod while you practice squeezing the trigger. When you can squeeze it all the time and the dime doesn't fall off, you're doing it right. You can just place the dime on the barrel, but it's not quite as accurate as a cleaning rod.

I haven't spent the time to perfectly zero it; the sights are a little off but I know how off they are and how I need to adjust my aim to hit the black of a target.

Eh, I can keep about a 4-5 inch square pattern at 100 yards sitting down with iron sights, but with a 16" barrel and 1 in 9" rifling it's no sniper rifle, and it's nowhere NEAR as accurate as the 03A3 at distances like that (800+ yards). I didn't say that it couldn't hit the broad side of a barn period; I said it couldn't do it from the same distance as the 03A3.

I know how to shoot. I've been shooting my whole life. My mother was a firearms instructor and a police officer, so I've been around guns forever.
