WarriorCleric
I'm pretty sure that the size of your chamber is way to big to get the best mixture of air and propelant for whatever it is you are launching, but still, got to appreciate the classic design. Zrothum
Yea, we've been experiencing not-so-great fire. But it's still our baby. We plan on cutting the chamber almost in half. But for now we're experimenting with the big one lol If we can somehow manage to get the right mixture/amount and utilize the huge chamber to it's potential...we'll have a beast! WarriorCleric
Or a bomb. What are you using for combustive juice? I'd recomend Right Guard, the crap created from the initial combustion is also combustible, so there is none of that sticky **** left over. I'll see if I can get a-g to get a picture of the one we use at home. Basicly it's the classic design+handle. I use a 3 inch chamber, a 1 1/2 inch barrel. The chamber has a 3 to 1 1/2 inch split in it, I cap of the split and seal it shut. I drove two nails through the hull of the chamber at an angle so the are a few centemeters apart, and I put the grill igniter on the barrel, run wires to the nails to make the spark gap. So you sorta hold it like a rifle, but you use your barrel fingers on the trigger. I have about 18 inches of chamber and 4 feet of barrel. I don't know what the best ratio of chamber to length is, but a-g and I are putting holes in sheds, and getting many hundreds of yards off of three seconds of right guard and a regular salt patato. Kinda looks like this. Nails / _._____ {_ _|__>============= \\ \ || Trigger *Disclaimer* Zroth and I are both village idiots, though pvc cannons may seem like simple fun, and in fact are, they are also dangerous. Consult your local laws before making and using. And I am 99% sure if you fire anything that is flaming or is explosive, you've just done something illegal no matter what state you are in. corpsestomp
I'd recommend a longer barrel for better accuracy, as with a real rifle, but for pure power, shorter barrel.

Ajindaar
Never heard of potato guns before (seems to be an american only tradition), but I think I got the general idea behind it... funny sh*t! http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=5271826118365465358 But now go and watch this one... Ever heard about the mentos and pepsi thing? Now imagine 200 litres of diet coke and 500+ mentos. http://www.eepybird.com/dcm1.html#featured-video

Backyard is one thing, but in the community like that, and shooting at the icecream man? That's just really stupid, and I really doubt he was having igniter problems, its more likely it was because how often he was shooting and filling, he probably just didn't have enough oxegyn in the chamber to ignite, it happens all the time. Just open the chamber, fire it off and let the flame burn out. And they are braging about fireing over an 1/8 of a mile? These people are just stupid. http://www.powerlabs.org/cannons.htm The one at the end, now that's impressive. WC

neckbeard
Oh how I love potato cannons, To WC: In general from my experience I have learned that having about 1.5 times barrel volume to combustion chamber volume offers the best ratio. I myself have 5 cannons, all of which I will no longer use due to their age, PVC likes to break down after a while. My fuel of choice...butane, hairsprays and deodorants like to gum up the pipe threads. But if you want real power, go pneumatic, if you can get a good butterfly valve or a super valve you will more than double your power. But then you lose most of the actual boom that comes with combustion, that and the fire, we all love fire. Another little hint, if you are using 1.5 in. dia. barrels the lid off of a gallon of milk fits quite nicely, so you can fire about anything. Barbie anyone...man, potato guns are sweet.
