Imoutgoodbye
Saw the movie. Very good. However, after a lengthy discussion with Belegrad, the movie has a rather large flaw. When Jackman first uses the Tesla machine, he shoots the "clone". I believed that the clone was the original or the clone thinking it was the original. That was how I tried to justify Belegrad's idea that this was a "screwed up scene." After much more discussion, I came to realize that if the clone had the memories of the original, he would believe he was never transported and thus never drown himself every night. But had he believed the clone was always transported for the prestige, he would know the trick would never work and thus, again, never drown himself. But beyond that, I loved the movie. HBwillie
Just can't get into the premise of the movie.
inscribed
I'm not sure I understand what you're saying. After the machine went off, a clone was created. This resulted in two wolverines, one in the machine and one off in the crowd. It is never stated which is which, and wolverine even hints that he doesn't know. After the machine finishes the process, a trap door releases, dropping the one in the machine into the tank below. It is not someone purposefully going into the tank to be drowned. In the scene at the end after wolverine takes a bullet, and they are discussing sacrifice, wolverine states that it takes courage to walk into the machine not knowing if he'll end up as the one in the machine or the one in the crowd. Did I miss your point?

Did I miss your point? My apologies...I was in a hurry when I wrote this. I see where you're coming from though and after much more consideration, decided there's too much conflict to say one way or another. I remember the scene you speak of. I also remember when Michael Caine's character runs into Jackman's after he believes he saw him drown(stinks I can only remember the actor names and not the character names) and Jackman says something about how he's always the original or he's always been alive. I was just disappointed in how it all turned out. There's not enough information on the machine. How was it calibrated to change distance? Was it fixed enough to not randomly generate who went where? And why does Jackman give two different lines on the subject?
Behrens
The machine always transported whatever object it moved a fixed distance to the same place. That's why the cat was transported into the field of top hats. He just calibrated the stage such that he transported to the balcony. He never knew which the clone was, since both of them had the exact same memories. That is why he said he never knew if he would be the one in the box or the prestige on the balcony. That's also why he had blind stage hands, since any person who saw that would react the way Borden did, and try to save him.
elfdude
that brings up the question; would you care if you were to die knowing that if you were the one to die, there is another person out there that is exactly the same thing as you, and would think that you are him. or something like that
