Alright, I don't know what to get my dad this year. He is really into poker/fishing/nascar/hunting. He is 55 years old, and has been going through

chemotherapy for the past few months. I don't want to get him a poker set (he has tons) or a fishing pole (lots of those too) and I know nothing about nascar, and am too broke to get a gun...so, anyone have any ideas?

Find you favorite picture with you and him in it.

Get it digitally enhanced and framed up real nice. Buy a nice card and some hunting apparel.

A father wants a gift that shows he left a lasting mark in his children. You want to give him something that shows him how much you respect him and how much he actually means as a father. Nothing hits home more than a picture that everyone has forgotten...but you haven't.

I watched a mother break down in sobbing tears when my ex girlfriend gave her a family portrait from the 1970s that had 4 generations of her family in it. It was touching, to say the least.

Evangelion, a gift card is the MOST horrible gift you could ever get a family member. It shows you don't know/care enough about the person to get something you may have had to think about.

I always think good gifts can be used many times. Something personal, that shows you actually sat down and said, hey, I want to get this person a really good gift.

If he has lots of fishing poles/guns, get two of them, one yours, one his (favorites would work best) and get them engraved: Dad's lucky pole, etc. And give them to him with a picture of you two fishing/hunting. That, and give him a card that states you'll have a father/son day to fish/hunt, no matter what.

Well' date=' it also kinda depends on the age group your buying for.[/quote']

In the matter of family/close friends, you should always buy a gift and not a gift card.

Oh come on' date=' CS. Nothing says "I love you" more than a piece of plastic with $20 written on it. ;)[/quote']

Oh I know, all I have to do is buy 3 of them a year, one for Mom's birthday, one for Mother's Day, one for Christmas. I can get a year's of shopping done in 5 minutes!!!

The thing is, that I personally prefer just flat MONEY from my family to gifts unless I've specified those gifts. Not gift cards (I've always found it somewhat ridiculous to give someone money but limit where they can use it), money. With friends it's different, but very few of my friends and I exchange actual gifts. Mostly we just party it up on birthdays and holidays.

Of course, my family really doesn't mean that much to me, so "heartfelt" gifts from them are kinda meaningless to me. The friends are what I value.

You said he's into poker, so I suggest you get him a poker book or two. I love poker and I've read a couple books and it really improves your game. So unless he's read a few, I suggest you pick up a couple for him. I recommend Doyle Brunson's Super System and one or two of your choice.

That's why I said American Express gift card. It shows you didn't just pull a bill out of your wallet, while allowing the recipient to spend their gift on almost anything.
