Aulian
I know this has been asked before, but still no definate answer. How the hell do you tell what sort of spell is which?! I mean how can you tell the difference between an aff and a mal spell? Lets take... Flashfire (BM) for example, is that aff or mal? Or even mental?! Yeah just wondering if there is another way besides experimentation.
L-A
Can be a bit hit and miss - and some spells draw from two types (eg wrath). General rule of thumb (this is not an exacting way to really tell: If it damages you, its afflictive. If its a maledictive, well, its maledictive (duh). The list of shaman spells are a good guide here. Most others are mental. Apart from that, heavily load whatever save type you think a spell is, and go fight someone who casts it. Then fight them without the high saves, you'll be able to see the difference. Cheers, L-A
Deykari
General rule of thumb (this is not an exacting way to really tell: If it damages you, its afflictive. If its a maledictive, well, its maledictive (duh). The list of shaman spells are a good guide here. Most others are mental. Here's the thing that got me though. The definition of a malediction is like a curse (not the actual spell curse) or execration. So, spells like plague, a shaman's blindness, dysentry, hex....all maledictions. But take blindness (not a flamestrike style blindness, or dirt kick..the actual affect 'blindness'). When cast by a shaman, it is a malediction. But when a BMG casts flashfire, even though the resulting affect is the same blindness affect as a shaman's, it is not -technically- a malediction because the blindness is a result of bright light and not a curse/execration. Would then, flashfire be saved against afflictive (I'm not asking the question, just raising a point to think about and to experiment with), even though the blindness type is the same as a shaman's malediction, or would it still be recognised as maledictive? Has a good chance of being either of the two. Dey EDIT: Umm..just realised I basically said exactly what Aulian asked except it took me three times as many words. Great going, Dey. Pali
As L-A said, it's not easy to tell with everything. If it's not in the help files, chances are it's information that you're supposed to figure out, not have handed to you.
Deykari
Yeah, agreed. With most spells, it's fairly easy to tell when you have sets of EQ on that vary between different types of saves. Dey

L-A
yeah so what is flashfire? mal or aff? Go and get it cast on you. You'll work it out. L-A
mya
Hum... What a nice topic. Spell type. If it was it so simple as to have only 3 classes of spell types. Because there are more. Ever seen: Affects savingbreath by -2. And the classic example of Minister (Sermon) that was flaged as breatfire and always landed on my elf. The spell system is not so linear as you think. Ever tryed to isolate a Ilithiad Necro ? Good luck, you would dirt kick for 2 tics first. Actualy i did once dirt kick for 2 tics. So on flashfire. Stock up on Saves vs spell as those tend to work on everything.
corpsestomp
Stock up on Saves vs spell as those tend to work on everything. But won't help you other places...
Implementor Anume Posted March 9, 2007 Implementor Report Share Posted March 9, 2007 svbreath is no longer part of this game, so don't worry about it. If you find any eq that has the flag, please report it.
Mister E
I found a box of Red Tic Tacs in the Volcano area, -10 saves vs breath...
KRins
Yeah...I have to ask why things like minister just about always land and other mentals don't?
corpsestomp
Minister used to check for saves vs breath weapons, something you couldn't get...so it landed a lot of the time. That's been changed.

KRins
I've shrugged off plague, poison with -20 mal. I'm been ministered with -40something mental
Questioner
Plague/poison is not as hard to cast, or hard to protect against as Minister. Plague/poison also doesn't take as much mana as minister to cast.
KRins
So...how hard something is to do makes it easier to do?
Questioner
Sigh......poison and plague can be cast at lower ranks correct? Minister is towards the higher ranks. Lower level spells, easier to protect against. Higher level spells, harder to protect against. Understand?
KRins
Ok...so why doesn't something that is high level, like say Spellkiller do more damage than chop? If a 50 cleric casts poison he casts it at level 50. Same as minister. Minister is just retardedly easy to land. If minister really is easier to land because you get it later then that is a huge balance issue.
