Who is St. Patrick, and why does he have a day.

His origin is interesting, too. He didn't initially go to Ireland just because he wanted to. He was captured, taken to Ireland, and sold into slavery. he eventually escaped and, upon returning back to his own country, began having dreams abotu teh irish people asking him to come share the gospel with them. And so he did.

And yes, the shamrock was important because he used it to symbolize the trinity. Pretty cool.

I suppose I am one of the few that find it appalling that we disrespect not only the Irish, but the Catholic church, when we celebrate a holy day by getting as intoxicated as humanly possible.

Then again - most people are content to secularize holidays. Christmas becomes just a day of giving and receiving gifts, Easter is day that the Easter Bunny gives eggs, and Thanksgiving is a day to gather around and stuff our gluttonous faces while watching a good ole game of football.

It's nice to hear you say that. I agree with all of it but the good ole game of football bit. It is much more preferrable than listening to the massive gaggle of geese that is my family.
