I drank entirely too much green beer yesterday, I did not know that your liver could hurt. I now know.

And knowing is half the battle, the other half is a 30 pack.

I think Elfdude hit it on the nose. These Irish-Americans behave that way because they have bought into the stereotype that the older generation of Irish fought (specifically in Boston) for years. A little FYI: Up until recently, pubs in Ireland were closed on St. Patrick's day. Sure some people might have had green beers in the comfort of their own homes, but the point of the day was not to get wasted - as is the case in the United States today. The point was celebrating the life of a Saint who brought Catholicism to Ireland, as well as celebrating the Irish culture (A culture which is richer than just wearing green and getting wasted). People cooked traditional Irish meals and went to mass. I guess my point is - if you got drunk (and I mean trashed) on St. Patrick's day, you did so because you are a lush - NOT because you are celebrating St. Patrick (or Irish culture for that matter) in any way, shape or form. Hah, I think about these things too much for my own good.

Personally, if I do drink on St. Patty's, it's because I love drinking, not because I give a damn about Irish culture or Catholicism. ;) Still, that's a very good point you make, that it is more Irish-Americans that get drunk on St. Patty's than actual Irish.

I suppose I am one of the few that find it appalling that we disrespect not only the Irish, but the Catholic church, when we celebrate a holy day by getting as intoxicated as humanly possible.

Then again - most people are content to secularize holidays. Christmas becomes just a day of giving and receiving gifts, Easter is day that the Easter Bunny gives eggs, and Thanksgiving is a day to gather around and stuff our gluttonous faces while watching a good ole game of football.

well, I was one of those americans that got fairly trashed on st. paddy's day, and the irish times i was reading actually had a story about it, and a letter from some priest saying it was disrespectful, etc.

the general public's response was, so, lets go get drunk anyway. Also, there was another articule stating that ireland happens to be one of the drunkest nations in the world, top three for sure. Of course some public/church officals were upset about that, then again, the public opinion was, so? Pass the Guiness.

Btw There's so many good looking girls over here, its almost ridiculous, Dublin is much better then the states, at least the ones I've lived in.

Dublin FTW!

yep, this was kinda a last minute, poorly planned trip, my mom has been buggin me for years to come visit her, and then my gmom croaked, so i was like alright, sure i'll come. unfortuneitly, the will didn't go through in time, so i'm without loot, i had quit work to tend for her, then didn't have enough time to get a job before coming over here. savings are almost gone at this at point, but i do have a job lined up in june when i get back to the states, with a fortune 500 company, woot! anyways, i got like two cartons of smokes i can sell, at like 5 euro a pack, and undercut the shops, so i can get another 100 euro, not to mention, wandering around the streets and finding money, found a 20 the other day heh.
