My Cat Hates Me!

Isadora

Recommended Posts

I just adopted a cat, and it already hates me. I feel like crying. At the center, it was so incredibly well-adjusted, affectionate, and sweet. I would imagine my quiet apartment is a lot less stressful than the tight cage, noisy shop, and different animal smells he was dealing with there. Why is he hiding from me? I even put him in his carrier in the bathroom with plenty of food and water and his litter box so that he can leave and explore on his own timing. I leave for four hours. I come back and the cat's still in the bathroom in the carrier! How can I make him not hate me anymore? He doesn't even respond to cat treats or toys. I feel like crying. I can't take this constant rejection ....

Often estranged animals will take a while to adjust. Especially when it comes to cats and new people in an environment that is new/strange to them. Just keep at it and be nice to them. Eventually they will get the hang of it. It hasnt been long so far ;)

At least after reading this post by Isadora... We can all take comfort in the fact that she really is a girl. :D

For those of you who are less observant, I highlighted her chickness in red.

Isadora, take back the cat and get a dog... Or just wait it out ;)

DUDE! That does NOT prove Isadora is a girl!

I love cats. I'd cry if my cat didn't like me. I'd feel so horrible! And I'm more used to the rejections of the human kind. :D But I love my kitten Snowball! He's an adorable white little siamese with blue eyes and he has the cutest orange markings on his ears and face! He looks like he's blushing all the time!

I'll bring over my kitten so Isadora's kitten has an uber cute kitten to play with. And he's SO friendly for a siamese!

Dude...he IS blushing, what with you walkin' around weepin' all the time.

Oh...and he's filing a restraining order if you make him ride inside your shirt again.

I had to do that with my two cats when I got them all those years ago. Just coax it out of its comfort zone with something (treats, toys, etc.) and then love on it for a good couple of hours. It'll still be kinda spooked, and probably go back to its carrier, but it'll be more willing to come out.

My wife is a vet tech, and pretty much all we have are cats. It has nothing to do with it being a 'less stressful' environment, it has to do with it being a different environment. Fact is, the cat doesn't know you yet. And this new place provides no area of comfort that the cat is used to receding into.

Give it a week. See if it doesn't open up. Play with it when it is out, feed it at regular intervals, and leave it alone when it wants to be left alone.

It's good advice. I did the same thing with my wife and, once she got used to being out of the cage, things have gone rather well.
