Dizz
Well, yesterday I went on a hike with my son's ranger club. After a 1 hour drive up the mountain, I found out the hike was twice as long as the last one. 6.5 miles. ... oh boy. We started out at the top of the mountain and visited the outlook. The ranger there told us about how he looks out for forest fires and lightning strikes. Very cool, his cabin was strapped to a cliff. We went on the hike and it was fairly steep. Part of the trail was washed away, but we found our way through. Anyway, we lost 1400 feet down and gained back 800 feet up and went around that cliff I had mentioned. Beautiful hike, and I would do it again, but with a slower paced group. At the end of the hike, we had a BBQ dinner waiting for us at the picnic site. My knee was sore and I was limping. I didn't pull anything, just sore muscles. Today I required ibuprofen to walk around. Still worth it. heh. I loved all the rock formations and plants up there. elfdude
Hell yea, I love hiking. I eventually plan on getting dropped off in denali and hiking back to the front.
Deykari
Sounds very cool, glad you enjoyed it. I love stuff like that. Last year I went for a long hike/climb. Uphill hiking, then traversed an arête (Striding Edge, scary as hell being stood on a knife-edge of rock with a large drop to either side) then from there, climbed England's 3rd biggest mountain, Helvellyn. Then descended that, and did three huge hills. Took my group an entire day (7:00 in the morning, got back for about 7:30 at night) and I was absolutely exhausted by the end of it, but it was one of the best experiences I've had in my life. So do you plan on doing more hikes with your son? Dey
Dizz
Once in a while with this group. They are talking more difficult hikes, but I would have to get in much better shape to do those. Jake can do it though.
Kinicky
That's sweet. I used to LOVE to go hiking in the mountians when I lived in Phoenix, AZ. I live in Florida now, though, which is all flat. Nothing quite like hiking through the swamp...
Tantangel
There's always taking a mini-vacation and coming out west to hike again, Kinicky. And yes, everyone has to get into shape to be able to go hiking. If you're not used to it, you tend to hurt and ache all over the next day. Kinicky
My wife and I are actually going to head up north in a month, to Michigan. We'll probably take a hike while we're up there. Funny thing about my wife... she LOVES hiking, but gets pissed when I tell her to take one... *shrug*
Grishnak
My favorite place on the planet is a mountain overlook. In the mountains, on a trail/overlook is when I most "feel" God's presence. I lead my volunteer groups on hikes every so often for team-building. One huge perk of being a professional camp employee! I get paid to certify in Wilderness First Aid, lead hikes and other fun adventure trips, and go have drinks with my volunteers.
Deptore
And that's why I love the Marines, 15-20 mile humps with a full sally pack. Honestly if I didn't love hiking I'd hate them but usually I can find a way to enjoy it.
