A Ghost of the Rift

Tales and Stories · by Herald Meriumae Tansay

A few rare demons do not find pleasure in manifesting physically, but instead make a dwelling place in the minds of various victims. Because of the complex natures of the brain, however, indulging in these activities is really a gamble for the ghosts of the Rift.

A demon called Patahlcant who never appreciated the idea of physical laws entertained himself on the sanity of the lower class citizens of Ofcol between the years 830 and 832 PC. He would at first disturb their sleep or toss loose objects invisibly about their homes. In the most extreme cases, he would take command of their motor functions and force them to rob shops or harm themselves in public. He found that manipulating the powerless was simple, and that those in poverty were ripe with opportunity.

The ones deemed possessed or insane were killed by the city guard. Fear was Patahlcant's weapon. To antagonize a simple bartender named Nyles, Patahlcant decided to possess Nyles' wife, but he could not have expected what would happen.

Instead of fear, Nyles' wife showed fascination. Eventually, she fell in love with Patahlcant, despite the plagues he brought upon her (sickness, destruction, nightmares). Patahlcant became entrapped in the fabrics of her mind and could not escape. Everything about his process of invading a mind was violated by this sudden twist on his expectations! He could not concentrate and became so weak that he had to retreat from Ofcol forever -- he did leave a scar, however.

The woman longed for the demon and his brutality so faithfully that she abandoned Nyles and became a cleric of Malchaeius. To this very day, no one knows her name.
