Grylok, Warlord
Faces In Time · by Historian Eril
What follows is the life and the mind of the Warlord Grylok, Bane of Archmages, portrayed as best as words may be able.
Grylok's memories began with burning sands. Caranduin was there, with its wind, the feeling of desolation, and incredible, scorching heat. Grylok's mother had passed away in child birth -- Grylok and his father shared a companionship that should be emulated by any father and son. It was in Caranduin during that time that the nomadic Ferals and desert wanderers made their covenants. Grylok's father was a trafficker of weapons, and was privileged by many meetings. One in particular taught him of connections to the great city of Rheydin and its Clan of Battle, and the spark of inspiration had been nurtured into a passionate fire.
With what money they had, Grylok and his father traveled to Rheydin and were introduced to a pleasant shock of culture. The recruiter of the Battle Clan Brakhum, when discovered, was unable to admit them without a fee, but was kind enough to provide a source of work. Being well versed in the ways of the whip, Gryloks father was permitted to teach lessons to new recruits, and Grylok himself became a cook. They worked for three years.
Then came the destruction of Rheydin.
Destroyed by the Archfiend Thulgan and the three-armed Timelord Sepahoona, Rheydin's hundreds were dying. Included among the victims was Grylok's father -- Grylok himself survived by happy chance, as he was away in Tarandue collecting cooking supplies. The anger and sorrow Grylok experienced would spill over the brim one day, but his vow to serve the Clan of Battle for the rest of his life was one of honesty and prophetic validity.
A decade of toil and fresh memories lingered on until Grylok was finally taken under the shadow of the Titan Tongar, and teachings began. Vengeful urges persisted and Grylok's heart was bruised by the blows of his past. He was prone to fits of rage and loss, going so far as to deathmark his own Warlord at the time, the Great Rhompt. Without the compassion and patience of the Warmasters, Grylok's career in the Camp would have ended then and there. These desires for war and closure manifest in Grylok's daily routines, and carried deep into his commandership of armies, waging countless battles against the Nexus to find and obliterate the core of his despair. The losses experienced by the Camp then were mounting higher and higher, and Grylok's rise in the ranks was halted.
It was through these experiences that Grylok was learning and forming a desire to forgive. He rediscovered companionship in his fellow Warmasters; the desire to protect them under a unifying canopy of trust remains today. Finally, with the discipline of Tongar and a heart restored, Grylok challenged the Archfiend Thulgan himself to honorable combat. When Grylok was victorious, all the lessons of his life became justified; recorded in his soul with the strength of engraved diamond.
Grylok's code of conduct, as a matter of the Camp's future, emphasized a focus on family doctrine. He believes in a clear, focused mind, and more importantly, the reliability of brothers and sisters under a banner of agreeability, support, and honor.
As of the time of this writing, Warlord Grylok yet lives and chapters remain unwritten.
