Athunasu Beast Druid Watcher vs Kalivar Undead Thief Nexus

Recommended Posts

I was fighting the Commander and Kalivar came and gave me a nice suprise. Once I killed the commander I was blackjacked. I ended getting away and then he came attacking my halls. I did as much editing during the chasing, so it might be random at times.

Before A Wreckage

Leaving the forest behind, you stand before the aftermath of a recent

shipwreck, and what a mighty collision it must have been.  The impact of the

ship has literally driven the land backwards, creating a make-shift beach.

The waters that splash upon your feet are polluted with flotsam.  The

further out you go, the more cluttered with debris they seem to become.  In

the distance you can see the main body of the ship, still somewhat afloat.

wood, clothing, jewelry, and food can be seen for miles on end.  Being that

the water is so clear, you can even see the heavier items from the wreckage

lining the murky sea floor.  Birds of prey maintain a steady presence in the

sky, always looking for an opportunity to feast on the flesh of those who

did not survive.  Amongst all the rubbish, many forms of sea life swim

about, getting adjusted to their surroundings.

Atop the Deck

You stand upon the top deck of the ship.  The deck seems to be made of

redwood indigenous to the trees of Elium.  Several patches of the wood have

been torn away, revealing the levels beneath the deck.  The angle of the

ship is slightly tilted, with a large portion submersed in the waters.  This

slight incline forces anyone trying to cross the deck to keep a steady

balance.  The mast of the ship is long gone, the only remnants being the

tattered sails that float in the waters.  From this vantage point, you can

see the waters all around you.  Sounds of the sea, the waves softly crashing

against the side of the ship, as well as birds of prey circling about, reach

your ears.

Sounds of the sea, the waves softly crashing

against the side of the ship, as well as birds of prey circling about, reach

your ears.

A Craggy Beachfront

This artificial beach was obviously made from the impact of the ship.

The way the rocks have piled up to make this beachfront, points to the fact

that the land was much further out at one time.  The waves crash on the

surface in a rhythmic manner, bringing the refuse from the sea along.  The

rocks of the beachfront are very sharp in nature, posing a danger to anyone

walking barefoot.  The smell of salt permeates the air, along with the cries

of several animals native to the land.  The sea expands to the east, a

horizon of blue waiting for anyone bold enough to journey.

The damage difference in this is big. Just goes to show that if a thief can’t get that blackjack/backstab then it’s basically a crap shoot for them. Poor thieves. The meta 100% against them.

This character has def opened my eyes to the limitations of the class and why we haven’t seen any do too well outside of Gladiator.

Clutch trap man! I was actually heading to feed on some nymphs haha.

Thieves should be called rogues and lose pry/plant and gain a toned circle stab defense and a more consistent debuff.

Plant/pry were awesome when you could pry necklaces, rings, and helmet to soften your opponent, but now most things are noremove, owner only, or bound which means you can’t.

On top of that, you have 1-2 ticks to get all that prying/planting done, set traps, and backstab. That’s A LOT to do in 1-2 ticks.

PLUS! You need to land blackjack to get any of that to happen. Anti-magic trap is far from reliable when it hits and if it doesn’t hit or is defused via the skill or scroll, you have to wait 2(+0) ticks to try again.

No one wants it to be easier for thieves to land blackjack because of pry. There are few things worse than losing your equipment to a thief that just logs off, so instead let’s replace a skill that is arguably the most “log-off” inducing skill and give thieves a better way to debuff their opponents that doesn’t hinge directly on landing blackjack.

This not only makes the thief a more fun class to play, but a more fun class to play AGAINST.

I agree with @Trick on these points.  Part of the reason thieves are hated is simply because they are the only class who can 'debuff' you for months.   You just got that last ring of accuracy?  Boom, theif blackjacks and steals it and logs off.  You didn't die or even fight, but now, unless the thief chooses to log back on OR chooses to not perma-hide, not much you can do about it.

However, I do think their defenses suck for the most part and their offense outside of a blackjack-backstab combo is pretty poor except against c/c.  Take away plant and pry (leave them still with steal) and give them some defensive/debuff capabilities like @Trick mentioned.   You could also give them a skill called Mug that lets them weaken their enemies defenses and offense proficiencies (parry, shield block, dodge, third attack, second attack, enhanced damage.  Not stats because that is too easy to cover).  Let it also stack per round of fighting a thief after initial use.  This way, a thief has a reason to open with Mug and then flee/murder for throw damage or stand and fight through weakening their opponents while keeping their roguish ways.  If their opponent chooses to flee, they can eat trap damage.  If they stay to fight, they will progressive defend less effectively and their offense will get worse and worse.

YOU HAVE NO IDEA how big my affective list was. The only time a druid is this effective is when you spend hours farming herbs and have every known spell up with the right armor. I have fought thieves Undead and Ferals with all my Druids and let me tell you, it's an uphill battle unless I fight on my terms. You fought on my terms and lost. If I didn't have the 25+ spell list and protections this fight would have went very very different. You are also forgetting that a lot of my damage was from an item I can use. That is just smart tactics. Thieves are absolutely nasty and I can assure you nothing much needs to be changed. This could have very easily gone the other way with one mistake on my end.

This log does an excellent t job of showcasing the dramatic differences in ninjas vs thieves as far as combat goes. Last I saw Kalivar he was decked. A similarly equipped ninja would have decimated. It's pretty clear thieves as a whole need to either have their skills made more reliable, or be given some skills to be able to compete. I realize there will be people reliving their 10 year old I got blackjacked and pried ptsd, but let's be honest. The only thieves in recent years who have been scary by any measure where the glad thieves and that's off the back of broken synergies. It never had anything to do with pry plant steal or traps.

I was TRYING to time a black jack so I had some hope of doing some real damage or gagging you. Like @Trick said, if you can't land that black jack 90% of the stuff you can do is out the window. I've even found that after I land the black jack and back stab that I get totally destroyed in melee the moment I am dirt kicked.

Not sure if a thief can survive with the heavy hitters. I feel more like a nuisance class even though I am in a god-tier, my damage doesn't even compare because I am out-defended.

Also, I was hasted in those exchanges with 55hit 58dam. If that's not enough then I dunno what is.

I’m just saying, it’s absurdly difficult to play a thief that relies on ambushes and catching your opponent off guard when the game has an average of 7-8 people.

You pretty much know what the thief is gonna do AND how they are going to do it. The difference with this compared to other classes is how easy it is to avoid blackjack compared to say dispel/sleep.

.5 round of lag on a spell that can be cast over and over vs a trap that your enemy needs to walk into AND not save vs OR defuse. If it DOESN'T work, that’s 3 ticks of waiting to try again or they high tail it. That’s not a practical strategy.

In a game of 25-30, its great. In a game of 7-8? Not so much.

Doing a damage add up, the Druid's damage appears pretty well spread. There's a lot of damage, even more than the magic trick, being done by simple basic attacks from werepower (which add up to a lot as devastates to MUTILATES through sanc). Pretty sure druids don't have enhanced damage, so that's some kickass basic attack output. Add in a couple thunderstorms and a hurricane spells and That kind of damage output is very very solid and dangerous. Now combine that with their incredible kit for protections (prep or no prep, the fact is they're available to the class and only this class), and their multiple incredibly safe exit strategies to avoid dying, and you have a class that looks pretty solidly in the OP category. The Druid here  DESTROYED the thief, without losing...3% of their HP.

No matter how you slice it, this fight was entirely one sided. So whoever said the fight was close or 'could have gone the other way' isn't speaking the truth. This thief got OWNED. And I don't think any amount of EQ buffing for the thief is going to compensate. Thief is already pretty well stacked in eq. Worth pointing out the Druid is also decked. However, the power spike on the side of the Druid here seems just a bit too high compared to other combos.

Incredibly lucky druid gate. Gotta feel good to seal it rolling the dice like that and coming up aces tho. Props. Thief never should have tried to run past. (He knows that) but shoulda booked out another direction ASAP without lookin' back. :)

While the druid is looking more and more solid as a class, it does require a high amount preparation as was mentioned. I don't want this to be another witch hunt vs the class that posted the log, but an opportunity to consider that the thief playstyle and kit doesn't lend itself well to the way the game has evolved.

Having spoken with the @Immortals, they have mentioned that they don't see thieves being changed, but I strongly advocate for a slight rework of the class.

Pry/plant is not effective. You can't circle stab when tanking.(which is always, shed/rescue is NOT reliable), and pilfer does a mutilate at best. That leaves you with murder/flee. A thief did VERY well in an era where your enemy was usually prepared for another opponent, but once you are prepped for a thief, that's that. They can't use 90% of their kit.

Thieves need an additional defense and a way to debuff like was mentioned above. Why play a thief when you can play a ninja? Its more defensive, more offensive, and has more suitability with their kit. I see NO reason to play a thief as they currently are.

Hey brother, I don't know how long you've been playing a thief for, but I'll tell you this. Thieves by far are the scariest class in FL. Period. It's the one class that you can insta die at anytime. So many of them have steamed rolled over the playerbase that sometimes aint nobody wants to come on once you sniff a thief around. You have to play so super safe and cautious when a thief is around hands down. If you are in a cabal war and ones around, even worse. The tools that thieves have access to are a serious nightmare. It just comes down to having the right play style that suits you. I have fought countless thieves and overall you just start to learn how to survive. Kelmi was by far the nastiest thief ever I've encountered personally  and because of fighting him all day everyday for months it really helped me figure specific strategies to survive. I was fighting him with Osyn or Nepta, one of them, I can't remember, but those we scary days. I really like your character Kalivar and think you play him well and I'm sure you will get your stride going.

You are wrong about the scariest thing. You are bringing up a combo that was so op that imms removed it from the game. As far as base thieves the biggest threat you face is losing some eq. It feels like alot of your stance is made up by using stuff that was true years ago, and not today. They just are lacking the firepower that made them scary because of the relationship their skills have with opponent eq.

I disagree immensely.

Kelmi and Danpher were Gladiators and didn't use their thief kit hardly ever. I fought them both across many characters in different cabals and they both rarely used blackjack and backstab. Their strategies were both the same in that they set traps, killed a low level mob to get forms firing, then murder/flee. Armageddon Smash would proc lag, they'd get a full murder round + throw. That lag let them flee and do that chain all over again.

I've played a few different thieves in a few different cabals and the result has always been the same. The scary thieves were; Danpher, Kelmi, Lisko(if you walked into him, he'll even admit it.), and Azantar.

Two were Gladiator, one only got kills when his opponent was cocky or a newb, and Azantar was so long ago in an era where backstab didn't have a cap to damage.

A thief needs to land blackjack in order to use: plant, pry, gag, backstab(if you want big damage). That's the majority of their skills.

Circle stab can't be done when you're tanking.

Pilfer is a mutilate at BEST and it lags you two rounds.

Your only option when fighting someone that can defuse your traps and has poison up is murder/flee and you saw from the log what kind of damage a vuln dagger throw was doing.

Well lets be transparent here. You asked Ere to look into some stuff and he did. He also made some changes immediately (ignoring the backlog of other crap) to accommodate you. It wasn't going to get an overhaul immediately, we know what that does, it looks like bards a year ago.

Other areas are being looked into for thieves. But they are not higher on the list than say; battlemages, or other pressing issues. So more than these minor improvements/tweaks will take time on coming.

EDIT: What I would like to see if thieves lose steal. Make it part of their blackjack package - if you actually blackjack someone you can steal/pry/plant. Instead of steal give them something that beefs them up in normal  combat. Make it situational like brawl is to a bard. I could see two things happening. 1. they become more dynamic. 2. I'd be happier fighting more of them because I wouldn't be worried about getting all my shit stolen all the time without being able to engage properly.

He did and I’m extremely appreciative and I don’t want it to be thought differently. The change made was fantastic and helped out a lot.

Steal, in my opinion, is fine. Bards have this skill as well, it’s more so the pry/plant that is not so fun to play as or play against. I hate not getting interaction because of the worry of losing equipment people have and I hate trying to implement the strategy as it’s not an effective or fun way to PK.

I want to actually beat my opponent, not slowly take their EQ until they log off or rage.

Most times I have to implement the strategy is because I have no choice, but to soften my opponent by prying/saccing  equipment I don’t even need or want because I can’t beat them otherwise.

I’m forced to loot pre-kill. It sucks.

That’s actually a pretty cool idea.. if pry worked mid-combat as you fought and random pieces were removed in rounds either automatic or command entered.

If added, though, thieves would need an adjustment to their defense. I’m in ~400ish -ac, 110 parry, and 55/58 hit dam and I get wrecked in regular combat rounds.

Just from my experience as a thief it seems like their skills scale very poorly versus good ac in general. You have a lot of trouble landing blackjacks and dual backstab versus moderate to high ac. Overall I just couldn't justify putting in that much work to have too rely on stars aligning scenarios. I had a fair a amount of pk attempts where I would backstab, and 4 rounds later I'm almost dead even after pries. Traps wherent helping me kill they where lagging people so I could stay alive lol. I just could take find a groove (slith thief for reference)

Come on, you can't take steal away from thieves.  That's like taking pets away from rangers.  It's a signature skill that should ONLY belong to thieves (not bards) IMO.  Thieves have it across the spectrum as far as PK ease goes.  There are times your PK will last less than 20 seconds.  And times you will have to try 20 times before you get the setup you need to win.  That's just the way it is.  This log doesn't show thieves having it bad, it shows poor play on the thief's part.
