In retrospect, with the sanctuary gone in that last few rounds, I should have been going for hellstreams only and piling on the pain, but I wanted to have some control over where she was fleeing (and was hoping for a fire blind). But the loss of my protection at the same time gave her too much additional damage to withstand at my already low health. Also, I felt like she was blinding me way too easily (less so in this particular bout, but in 30-45 minutes worth of encounters today I burned through 8 gyvels and ~45 dark red potions, plus 2-3 cabal healer cure blinds. For reference, I have -18 to spell and -21 to mal. I'm always trying to figure out how to upgrade my gear, but I need to balance AC (mine is considerably lower than it should be IMHO), spellsaves, and hp. Like I said - any and all feedback welcome. I think you should experience more call lightning/dispel magic. Also try to have firestorm up when she come, unless it is a friendly mob that you will strike in the area. Link to comment

The problem I see here is the same as the last PK log vs. Despeynia....you're fighting on her terms. Namely, time of day (or night in this case). You have detect magic, use it to your advantage. Also you should have at least -50 saves. -39 is not going to cut it against a vamp at night. Maybe during the day, but def not night. Link to comment
Celerity Posted December 27, 2019 Report Share Posted December 27, 2019 Call lightning is way better. Keep the damage shield up as you did if she doesn't use magic weapons. Call lightning for damage, flame arrow for chasing. Hellstream is a trap. You'd think it would do way more damage to a vamp, but it didn't, so switch it out. Time is on your side so if she doesn't want to aggress, make her pay with hours. You can force the call lightning this way. If she hastes, just disengage. Make her ping your firestorm and waste the haste. I always liked to make people chase me after they find me for a few ticks, just to throw off their spell timings they just refreshed for the fight. Real easy to do in the chasm, even against a vamp. Anyways, don't commit early. You don't want to be really hurt at the wrong time of night when she is approaching full power. You want to be hurt when morning is coming and she has to consider a reset and pushes too far. You can try dispel a time or two, but do a bout with just call lightning. You might not even need dispel. Dispel is to punish those people that try to dress down to lower your lightning output. You'd have more luck acting like a melee and glancing at affects and seeing what she forgot. You know she isn't perfect because she let sanc drop on you like that. There isn't much she can do except hope for the silence, energy drain or mal you up. Esuna staff is your friend, of course. This fight will get easier for you and harder for her as you gain cabal ranks. Link to comment

I didn't see one Dispel magic attempt at all. I would put a few in there. When she gets comfortable to the damage you've been doing with hellstreams, I would switch to call lightning and try to go for the kill with dispel magics sprinkled in there to hopefully make some charred vampire. Celerity pretty much nailed it already. Only thing I'd do different is save my call lightnings for the finisher. Nothing like 4 call lightnings when someone is a nasty to make them go OH SHHHH>>>>>TT Link to comment

You may want to invest in poison potions, if you rely too heavy on firestorm you will get caught eventually. As far as this fight goes, it's going to be an uphill battle, vamps get some crazy quick melee damage but it sounds like you know what you need. If you're going to use call lightning, fight in the open. If you're not, get ready to jump on the dispel if sanc drops. Also, onyx crosses and a globe are quick and easy to get for some impromptu Mal saves. Link to comment

Pali Posted December 28, 2019 Report Share Posted December 28, 2019 While I generally agree with the advice already given, I've got three bits to add. First, vamps do have some spells that can do okay damage, so there's a case to be made for using mana shield if you're fighting defensively - for instance, if you're not going for the kill but rather you're trying to run down the vamp's consumables or destroy their eq, the extra damage from fire shield doesn't really help achieve those goals while the extra protection from mana shield can mitigate proc'd damage or the vamp's aff spells if they switch tactics away from mals unexpectedly, perhaps allowing another round or two of casting before you disengage. Second, following that train of thought, don't discount your ability to blow things up - engaging to just drop a few ice storms or hellstreams in the hope of blowing something up and then running is a time-consuming but sometimes viable strategy. Third, either go for dispels right away, or save them for when you're both getting a bit down in hp. Dispel is great for setting up a kill with burst damage or for burning through an opponent's consumables in an extended fight, but if you're aiming for the kill the dispel needs to hit them when they're already hurt, and if you're aiming to burn consumables there's no reason to cast anything else first. And Celerity could not be more right regarding spells - hellstream is NOT the spell you should be primarily using against anyone that has decent saves (unless you're specifically trying to burn gear). Call lightning will usually do more damage more quickly, and ice storm cuts through high aff saves better if call lightning isn't on the table (and, again, has the chance to destroy weapons). Chase with flame arrow and follow it up with either call lightning or ice storm once you engage - just do your best not to spam these area spells so that you can follow if/when they flee again (especially ice storm with its greater lag). There are times hellstream is the right spell for the job, but you've usually got something better in your arsenal to use. Link to comment

Here's a tactic I used often on my last serious invoker (Othrynus, Avian Avatar invoker...i think there are a couple PK logs that showcase this). You can use firestorm similar to how paladins use flamestrike except you have to flee and re-cast it. Don't cast firestorm and wait, go to your opponent and cast it. That initial surge of brimstone has a chance to fireblind. I believe subsequent surges also have a chance but not as reliably as the first cast. I took down every single badass at the time with that tactic except for Thulgan (ogre roar saved Anume in every fight I had her on the ropes). Edit: Looks like Othrynus' time was prior to the Forum move so those PK logs are gone. Link to comment
