I've tried to push languages since 1.0 (as well as others) would be great if it actually got implemented. +1 from me!
Languages
We've got several pages worth on imm only. We're hammering through the (surprisingly many) issues.
Any reason not to share it with us? Players can probably hammer through the issues pretty quickly.
I certainly understand ones reason for wanting more distinct languages but i for one don't believe its needed or would be anything more than a hindrance. I've always appreciated a players effort in constructing his or her own speech with the rp of their individual characters, but at the same time have hated ogres drunk like speech forced upon players. Simply stated i believe this should lay on the shoulders of players to decide how their charcters talk not in game code.
I personally really like this idea. My thoughts are to have different languages "learnable". So the base language skill would be common, so that everyone can talk to each other and possibly could be hard coded to have slight nuances similar to ogres like v's that are said like p's or something like that. Then through some means as your exposure to other languages increases you can learn to understand and speak in that tongue. Then set it up as a toggle-able skill which defaults to common and can switch to the various languages you have learned. Make it INT based, on how many languages the different races can learn, outside of their racial and common.

This is more or less the working concept at present. We have other exciting changes higher on the roster, however.
Durr. This change is coming to a "teacher" near you in the -very- near future.
:woohoo:
I can't wait to see what you guys got, so far I dislike the idea. I'll go into detail later.

Ditto.
I just feel as though this is going to either make it more difficult for newer players to get used to the game as well as into their characters, or take away from the rp that is present in the current pbase. I can see the positives also, like it can be come a great and detailed experience. And I am sure that you guys have made it very detailed, but don't let it be too complicated, a lot of us play when we are effed up.
So opening up hundreds of new RP opportunities would be bad for this player base?
I don't think you understand that everyone will have the "common" language skill, and could speak in that indefinitely if they so choose. Those who don't, or wish to speak privately and enjoy the experience of learning a new language can if they choose. There is no "PK" advantage or disadvantage in this.
It is for fun. It is to broaden FL's horizons even more. It is to create a more immersible atmosphere. It is to help those who would like to RP get more in tune with their characters.
Explain how this is detrimental to the game (or, you specifically)?

I have had this feature on two other muds that focus more on RP than PK. The languages do not create a barrier. Default language is common, everyone understands it.
Starting it at 75% just makes language real, and your language skill improves with use, so its an easy win.
You do create more feel of common heritage with others of the same race. Creating an obvious avenue for RP. One I know many Drow players would love, since they tend to use drow language even in tells.
I do not think it will be a detriment at all. Just add some flavor.

cut, paste, cc to all my contacts (so +1 as you all love to say)![]()
Side note, how about a NEW perk for the Dales of Aabahran. Polyglot.
