Ranger help

Now I know we can't talk to much about selectables..but I was wondering what people would consider the 'best' ranger path for someone totally new to the class, infact someone basically new to classes that need to gather things (previous experience has been Clerics/Paladins/invokers who have less need to collect stuff to put up the necessary buffs.

I was thinking beastmaster - as it basically doesn't require the Ranger to do very much - its more of a lantent power up - I.E your beasts have a bit more punch, and you get one more of them. The other selections seem (at least from what i read on the forums) to have a higher power peak, but might take a bit more experience to use them properly.

If infact I'm way off, please feel free to tell me, but I'd ask that you do it with at least a basic explanation, Answers like - Halfling Archer Stalker Elder - don't really do much for me, as my knowledge of cabals, or even the selectable skills and how they are used is very limited.

I believe I gave my statement about my three top ranger combos in another post, let me find it.

Beastmaster - You get an extra pet and they are all stronger. Witht his path pets are your life. You have skills to get them where ever you happen to be, skills to keep you and them both alive, and a way for them to get back to you if you were split up. With this path you gotta watch your pets hp aswell as your own and decide when it'd be best to drop the group herb.

Archery - Archery is an often selected path because you can hit almost every vuln. Aswell as do a little bit more. Pets aren't really your main concern with this path and you don't need to focus on them much. You can use the arrows for more damage in combat rounds.( You shoot every other round unless you use another skill provided by this path. ) Hit and run tactics are what this is all about. Ever fight Kronit? He is a perfect example of the tactics you'd use if you don't want to stay in combat. On Trienklor, I used archery just to give me that extra punch in combat mostly. If I was eqed I fought straight out, if I wasn't so decked I'd shoot. Life was easier then because it lagged, but it doesn't anymore so you need to be fast.

Tracker - One of my recent projects, Thandaeus, was tracker. This could very well be my favorite path. You can find almost anyone you want with this. A pesky qrace bothering you? Track'em down and get'em when they are most vulnerable. Throwing is insane. I loved it. An ogre ranger knight E that could lag. It saved my *** alot and it helped me take down my opponents far easier, ask Sirican. Tracker does offer something that is really helpful, and that is concealment. You can camo yourself and your pets/charmies. It is SO helpful.

for you first and less experienced with the class, beastmaster.

^^^^^^^^^^^

I hope that made sense.. haha.

If you don't mind spending a couple hours training fletchery, Archer is the way to go. You can hit most vulns and you don't have to buy arrows or a bow.

I think beastmaster is kind of a rip-off. I still haven't pinned a tracker ranger, so I'm not sure about that.

yeah i prefer Archer by far, but for first char. beastmaster I would say. If not for the pure fact of Concealment.

Beastmasters don't get concealment. Trackers do.

oh hell, your right. I always get that mixed, then yes, agreed.

I would tell a newbie ranger to go tracker because you can use your rogue qualities better with concealment and you have the option of having a weapon there to be drawn in case of being disarmed, which can be a life saver alone.

Yea. Also, some people have said abuut going BM because you don't need to manage skills as much; I'd say it's better to jump in at the deep end. Like rolling a battlemage to get better at spell management.

The best way to learn is to:

  1. Make what you want to.

  2. Jump right in.

  3. Log everything.

  4. Review logs to see why you lost.

  5. Repeat ad nauseum.

Death is a great teacher.
