Thief tips of the day

I have learned this game from trial and error and feel my toons are quite effective in making the "public scene"
But Warpnow is right...
This mud has to be one of the most un-newbie friendly ones out there. My first ever experience was getting past lvl 10 and getting gank killed by 15, asking for help and getting told to piss off in game in rp constantly, and finding at best inaccurate info regarding game basics on the forums...some things in those essays are so wrong that people shouldnt read them.
BUT! Because of all this the game is more rewarding when you actually figure something out, when you find that new item, when you discover that sneaky tactic...so its a split...newbie friendly is good..but hey, if you want long time returning players then FL has the right idea.
Newbies will come and they will go, those that leave after the first death werent going to stay anyways...but someone who plays the game and trys to learn and explore will stay for a long time to come. But the thing that makes FL a returner for me is that you CANNOT find lists of areas and you CANNOT find walking directions to quests and then walkthroughs for them and you CANNOT find the mathamatical solutions to min/maxing your toon's like you can on the MMORPG seen...this is what makes FL an awesome experience.
Seconded.
hm, in reguards. I've played many characters in the academy and taught a lot of lessons, the heralds do a damn good job in helping newbies if I remember.
Yes, I saw a certain elf healer helping a newer player the other day.
Oh yeah the academy does help a lot in learning the basics.
I geuss it comes down to what you define as newbie friendly...and FL honestly is a very very harsh game...because even though they have been through the academy there is a lot of things in the late game especially once pinned that new characters just dont know. I would be suprised if there is a person here who's first pinn wasnt pkill food for the active base at the time...
The MUD is newbie friendly. Entirely. From the help files to the clan quests and so on. It's the PEOPLE that aren't newbie friendly. Most anyway. And they're just IC.
FL just has a very steep learning curve.
if the staff didn't want us to aid newbies, there wouldn't be the academy. Although I am unhappy that it is connected to Heralds now...

I agree, but you work with what you have. And we can't have it all.
When I was a new player, and I was looking for help or advice, I asked around in game. I know, it probably sounds crazy. But I found that if I would RP it a bit, play something like an eager student, and also show intitiative rather than just looking for handouts, veteran players that I interacted with would share a lot of tactics. My characters have also shared thoughts and tactics with other characters who RP it out.
I don't really see characters trying to build a teacher-student relationship in-game anymore. Even an evil character can help people in game if approached correctly, and I really enjoy helping out when people actually put some effort into it. I suspect that a lot of vets feel the same way.
I can't remember the last time one of my characters was asked anything about strategy. I do see a lot of people asking how to do things on the forum, though. Also remember, not everyone goes to the forum, so some people are only learning in game.
what happened to the tips?
