A Better Journal Idea?

I am trying to take advantage of the journal but having a few challenges writing notes of this size,

im constantly hungry, thirsty, drug withdrawals, hunted, "who/where/who/where/who/where" ect ect,

basic gameplay keeps taking my attention. Ive been told to write things in notepad but you know what?

Notepad isnt a part of the game, but the forum is.

Also with the journals only immortals get to see them which I think sucks for the rest of the players.

My suggestion is to have another anonymous thread that everyone can read but (if possible) only allow the thread starter

to add replies, ie more journals. At the end of everyones (play session) they can add a few lines, paragraphs OR pages

that shows the game from that chars POV. It will add a ton of public content to the forum that would only enhance the ingame

experience, it will also attract more players to the game.

Im sure players would like to read specific journals to see if they got mentioned or to see why someone is acting the way they

are, it would also help expand player run plots and allow other people to get onboard (if they wanted to). The journal thread

should be transferable to ingame knowledge where someone can come to the forum, read a specific journal and say "So thats

why UC was looking for goblins in a panic"

UC

For a while, on one of my mains I only did journal entries about other people I ran into.  I would talk about what i think about them and the ends and outs of our relationship followed by how I intend to use them for my gain.  I even did one for Anume and then I have been known to just do crazy ramblings to show how difficult upcoming decisions are driving them.

Having played a few writers, I would suggest that you write notes in another word program.

I like to set my right margin to 4.5, while this is slightly shorter than the wrap around, it allows

me to keep a clean edge on my notes/applications ect. Of course I also have macros set that

insert "application + " or "note + ", this allows for me to transfer even a very long note before I

get the first hunger pain.

Also it allows me to avoid the "editor". So I am free to enter commands in between. The who,

where, and the one always messing me up, reply.

As for the Journal to forum transfer, it seems we would see a lot of people IG using this OOC

knowledge. After all, my healer did not find your journal in game, and therefor should have no

knowledge of your characters' journal, my healer may have never met your character, should

my healer know your goals and history before your name? Its a good Idea, but the evil in it

may out weigh the good.

I like it, but on the other hand, some journals aren't for other characters to see, or at least not in the moment, so it should be optional. On a different note, I'd like to see a way to publish journals into the Herald Library for those who choose to. Or perhaps a "best of compliation" of them when the character dies.

On some of my characters, in my journals, I explain how my character plans to abuse, use, manipulate and/or bribe other characters to his own benefit. Other times I explain things which I basically want noone but the IMMs to know because they can use them to their own advantage. In many of my logs on prayer forum I explicitly ask the IMMs to NOT post them before the character is gone, for those same reasons.

That being said, if you want people to know your character better, send notes to everyone. Jhalice used to do it.

I don't think other characters/players should have easy access to one's history, personality and goals. In real life, you don't know what the people on the street are except you get to spend some time with them. Sometimes you don't really know the people you've spent years with even. That's the beauty of a relationship. Sometimes you have to be careful not to offend someone. Sometimes you have to work hard if you want to offend someone. There shouldn't be a shortcut, IMO.

I might see this as applicable to people who would logically have the ability to obtain and read someone's journal.

Egads! My diary! The world will know of my deepest and darkest secrets!

What if we could draft journals the way we can draft notes?  We could "let slip" some of our entries.

Very nice alternative Magick.

Currently only certain people can draft, perhaps we could make draft a skill that can be applied for.

Draft would not give anyone a PK advantage. Why should we deny an RP tool to most of the Pbase?

Yes, +1 for Magick's Idea.

We already have physical notes in game. Why not use those?

I just thought it would be a good way to merge peoples game world and enhance their experiences while 'creating

a ton of public content' that will help lore new players.

UC

This can be done if I could merge the webhost and the mud together (which at this point may not be plausible)

Yes.

I would also like to see more notes to Herald regarding faction news.

example;

Note to Herald

Note subject Tower News

note + Historians,

note + Today marked a banner day in tower history, Zhaar has been named as the Overseer of

note + the Tower. Taking back all lands east of the Sands of Sorrow, Zhaar intends to drive the

note + warmasters back into their encampment and seal them in forever.

Heralds could use notes like this to compile regular news reports.

Ahh well, give it time I am sure the Heralds will find a way to once again acquire this information.

Also, perhaps notes from level 50's to herald describing histories, including journals, and aspirations.

These notes could result in a character being immortalized on the who's who shelf.

Been a while since anyone cared to submit one.

I should make a herald and write Dilorry's, she will not sink to the shameless self promotion of writing her own.

Very unlikely you'll see Heralds delegated to copying and circulating more of this sort of thing. Notes are already tedious, and boring. And this would only solidify the unfortunate reality that CURRENT heralds are little more than mailmen, something that annoys me a great deal.

Not to come off as hostile, please continue to share ideas!

I like your idea about stealing/snooping others journals Volg.

I like your idea about stealing/snooping others journals Volg.

I don't think he suggested that, but that's not a bad idea!

Imagine syndicates having the ability to read someone's journal entries and history/purpose/personality (not sure about personality actually), for a hefty amount of CPs of course, and then selling said information to willing buyers. It gets even funnier if you consider that the information they are selling you might not even be true!

That would just about turn me off from writing journal entries entirely.  If you're going to do that, do it to notes.

A journal is like a diary, something that's a personal and coveted piece of correspondence that's (stereotypically or otherwise) protected above all others.  Whether it's a teenage girl keeping her private thoughts from her snooping brother or the allied forces keeping cipher keys out of enemy hands, the information is going to be rare at best.  Much easier to intercept messages being delivered, be it stealing from the mailbox or intercepting carrier pigeons than breaking into a house and rummaging around the place while you're looking for what is essentially a bound stack of papers that can be hidden anywhere.

To be constructive, let's say it is an idea that comes to fruition.  "Hefty" should just begin to describe the cost.

25 cps to read a random note.

100+ cps to read a random journal entry, though I think that 250 would be a more reasonable starting point.

I was actually thinking about much more than that

And it should perhaps be an E skill.

But I don't get you really. You are OK with drafting journal entries and spreading them around, but you are not OK with someone snooping them?

What if we could draft journals the way we can draft notes?  We could "let slip" some of our entries.

The main difference with journal entries that I draft and 'lose' is that I'm in control of what information is laying about and when.

When journals are snooped, it's out of my control and if I decided to lay out in detail a major plot I'm working on in my journal and Random Syndicate #3 happens to read it, it could stymie the entire operation.  Sure, it could also make thing interesting.  But what if I'm venting to my journal in character about Bob TheGuyWithNoLastName and Bob gets a hold of that information through snooping himself or buying the information, and the player happens to take it wrong and start raging OOC, now making me a target across all his characters?  Sure, that's a bit extreme, but possible.  I see journals similar to in game, in character Prayer Forum while notes is the General Discussion forum.  I expect everyone to read General.  I expect only Imm's to see Prayer.

You can put characters in the to section of a journal so just that character gets it. You can also put some sort of disclaimer saying it wasn't on "purpose". IE:

  • Passing along a common road in the Dragon Teeth Mountains you spot a dirty, torn piece of parchment. -

(insert body)

  • You feel as though you were not supposed to find this page to Trick's personal journal. -

Or something similar.
