Much like the ability to focus on the use of a particular weapon type,
a fighters' guild may guide their members to further their skills in the
arts of shield use to a degree beyond that of common fighters. This
dedication allows the skilled fighter to surpass common adventurers in the
skill of shield block.  They have learned how to consistently and safely
block all matters of incoming projectiles with their shields.  Furthermore,
their superior skill with shields allows them not only to position
themselves to withstand heavy bashes from their opponents but also to
deliver devastating bashing blows with it.  
 
Those warriors who focus their expertise and mastery on shields enjoy
special synergies, their shields as much a part of their bodies as their
limbs.
