Saplings & Fire Flies
Encyclopedia Exoterica · by Academician Mathicus Flon
Two saplings sat in a grotto arguing over the existence of fire. The one on the right was Junie, and the one of the left was Yookie. Their conversation went as such. -+-+-+-+- -+-+-+- -+-+- -+-
"I have never seen fire, so it must not exist", implied Yookie.
"I have never seen a fire fly, so they must not exist", said Junie.
"That is not so, I have seen a fire fly", Yookie responded.
"And I have seen fire, so it must exist even though you have not seen it."
"Well how do you know that what you saw wasn't actually just a fire fly?" asked Yookie.
Junie sighed, saying, "Well how do you know that what you saw wasn't just fire?"
"Because I have good eyes, better ones than you perhaps", Yookie retorted.
"Fire is bigger than fire flies. I do know what I saw."
"Well how do you know that if you have never seen a fire fly to make the comparison, Junie?"
Junie sat up, asking, "Are you saying that fire flies are bigger than fire?"
Yookie asked abruptly, narrowing his beady little black eyes, "Well, perhaps I a -..."
Junie interrupted, "What do you think makes a fire fly glow at night?"
"What does that have to do with size, Junie?"
Junie shrugged.
"I would guess that it must be the fire in their little tails", Yookie responded.
"Oh, so you -have- seen fire. When you saw the fire fly."
Yookie shook his head, "No, I didn't say that."
"You said that fire flies have fire in them, therefore, when you saw the fire fly, you must have seen the fire as well."
"Well, then what is to say that when you saw fire, you only saw it because it belonged to a fire fly!?"
There was a very long pause, the silence broken only by chirping crickets.
"Fire is prettier than fire flies", implied Yookie.
