The Art of Poetry

Cultural Studies · by Academician Khranin Tansay

Poetry. Much could be said on the subject of this style of writing. From simple childrens rhymes to the most complicated of ballad, poetry has been perhaps one of the most versatile forms of writing. Poetry has been used since ancient times to put thoughts to pen and to get across ideas to the masses. It is perhaps one of the most beautiful ways to use letters and words to convey an idea. Interestingly enough, many rulers, from kings to tyrants, have been known to be avid fans of poetry, or are poets themselves.

Now, as previously mentioned, there are many forms of poetry. I suppose one of the first things that needs to be known about poetry is that it does not have to Rhyme. The Rhyme is a form of poetry that is often used in songs, childrens tales and limericks. It is not however a necessity for every poem.

Many forms of poetry do not Rhyme. Sonnets and ballads of love in particular do not often Rhyme. Sometimes they will have a particular rhythm to them, however not always. Once again, it is not a necessity for poems to rhyme all the time.

Another form that is often over looked is one that is used in combination with another art; music. Yes, the song is a type of writing, or at least, any song with words to it. Some of the most ancient lessons and stories come from this particular form of poetry and it is perhaps one of the easiest to relate with. When words are put with music it makes for a stunning combination which can sometimes last from generation to generation and age to age. The art of writing songs is truly a beautiful one.

It would do well to note that many cultures have their own

individual form of creating poems. Each with an unique style and flavor to it, which is special to that culture. It is always a treat to look into other cultures writings, for such teaches much about the culture itself.

There is a great history behind the art of poetry. For eons writers have scribbled and scribed poems on various occasions for various things. Poetry is an age old, time tested form of art, and indeed a great tool. From the greatest of leaders that put their poems to paper to the greatest messages that have been delivered in the form of a poem. As you look around at the various authors of the ages you will see many true works of art in the form of poetry.
