If your in a clan of a certain cabal do you still have to write an application to get in?

Yes. At some point you will receive a message showing that you've been given an opportunity to apply. Then you send in a written app... generally, by that point, you're pretty much guaranteed in unless your app is badly done or the cabal members don't like you.

not quite that simple. Once in the clan you can do clan quests. Doing these as well as showing good RP will get you promoted in the clan. In time if you show the cabal imm that your worthy, u will be allowed to apply. At that point the cabal will vote as to whether u get in or not, so it pays to get to know them.

You have 7 days left to apply to your clans cabal.

is the exact message you will get.

Send an APPLICATION (not a note) to your cabal, the subject containing both the words application and the name of your cabal:

example:

Application to Nexus

Appl subj Application to join the Ranks of the Nexus Horde

or simply Appl subj Application to Nexus

If it was game days, anyone who spent a day away from the computer would never get caballed.

7 game days is just less than one hour and a half in RL. Would have to be quick writing that app.
