How does one improve and use the magic strike for paladins?
what spells or skills is needed for it to work?

That's kinda a 'figure it out in the game' type thing. But, like anything else, for training, the more you use it, the better you get at it.
I think you need to master it.
You have a chance to improve it everytime someone bashes or bodyslams you, so you need a friend with lots of time to spam it.
I personaly never ever seen it go off. So i cannot answer you.
Good luck finding out. Because i already put the mastery of this skill on the to do list after 2050.
You do not need to master magic strike for it to fire off. Read the help file, think, figure out the rest.

I also was in battle against ogres for 1 hour and nothing improved
