I actually still don't understand why theives get mace anyway.
Play a thief without ever practising mace. You will notice a big difference between a thief that has practised mace, and one that hasn't.
Think about how you use a mace, then think about thieves as a class. Its pretty obvious if you think about it long enough,

Yoou words were you can backstab with a sword, you didnt say shortsword.
As well that shortsword is hardly ever used by anyone past rank what 20 and I guarantee you will never see a 50 using such a piece of crap.
