What is the purpose of journals beyond character development? Am I allowed to write them as memories, or just daily activities? Can they be used to tell a story?

Help journal is helpful for syntax, it is rather vague in what they should accomplish

Journals are intentionally vague, because all of those formats are acceptible, though diary format is most common. Just ensure that they've got substance, because we read them all and we don't want to read 500 words on the hole in your codpiece.

I woke up.

I went to work.

I did work.

I ate.

I went home.

I went to sleep.

Substance enough? ;)
