I was wondering the IC acceptability of asking someone to identify an item for someone else. I realize that identify is meant to give casters an advantage and that there are non-caster ways available to identify someone, but given the difficulties with the latter, I could see it as acceptable to ask a casting to identify an item and tell you its stats. Is this the case? If so, how detailed are casters allowed to be when discussing an item's stats in an IC manner after casting identify?

True. Which is funny because it assumes the other person knows the statistics of said compared item. I perfer to reply to the inquisitor "well it would appear it makes one more accurate, by more than a measure." or "it appears this cloak will hinder your opponents afflictive spells, it could save you perhaps 3 times out of a hundred". The inquisitor often has a clue what it is they wish to know, and being vague rarely aids them at all.
That said, there is a problem with roleplay if we as players can not concieve that a brilliant mage, priest, or even bard could tell us the exact properties of a given item.
On a side note, any of you ever played an evil mage or priest and flat out lied to the inquisitor? 
Yeah, what f0xx said. When I was in the role of the caster, I would veil it in a similar way. +dex was frequently described as "making you lighter on your feet", damroll as "causing more grievous wounds"... you can get your point across without completely breaking RP. I am also under the impression that asking for someone to identify something is perfectly fine, it makes RP sense... you ask for an ID... they can do it out of the kindness of their heart, charge you for their troubles, rip off your face for bothering them, or any number of things.
Croyvern: No... but that is a sharp little RP angle that you might find poached if I ever drag myself back.
