Introduction and maybe a question or two.

Greetings. I am a new player, am from Norway, and have been around for about 1-2 weeks so I thought it was time for an introduction. I am not new to mudding, and thought i'd give this one a try because it looked really interesting, especially because of the compulsory rp. I've made quite a few mistakes of course, and I thought i'd flesh some of them out here so other newbies can read about them and then make the same mistakes

I started a half elf- ranger as my first character, and that seemed at first like a well-rounded nice character. And it is for sure, and that is not my problem. From the impression i get though, it is really easy to have an IC reason to kill an half-elf, so that is why I would not recommend it(the race) as a first character. Shrug, that is just my initial thoughts. My halfling on the other hand have an easier time for some reason.

I have been killed so i've lost 2 con points already I think, but that's to be expected of course. My dilemma is if I will stick it out and play, or just start over with another character. At this point I think I am going to stick with it though, and play it out. I'm still trying to flesh out a sort of history, and at the moment I have mapped out some of the key areas. So that's the start of my history, a ranger half-elf who makes maps.

I've started to barely grasp some of the low level equipment, and i've met some good people who have helped me out. The wiki also have been a great help. Whats gotten me confused now though is potions, pills, drugs etc. It would have been great to have a section of what does what in the wiki, but i am guessing since its not already there its fofy info.

I should have joined the academy right off the bat, I see that now, but i'm over level 30 already so from my impression its not an option anymore. The way i'm going though, I expect to die from the con loss in not very long, then I can start over and do it right.

Anyway, apologize for the long intro and almost no questions, and im looking forward to getting to know the player base more. Feel free to move it to the OOC lounge or something if needed.

I left the names of my characters out on purpose btw, but it should be kind of obvious. I'm the guy who camps out at random spots close to major cities(a big no no as i understand)

I will probably think of some questions along the way.

ah thought of some questions:

• What is the definition of a pinned character? I think it has to do with high level?

• How much should I worry about eq? my main concern being magic, although I kind of struggle with the armor system also. I get that the more negative the better, but does weight matter at all? do weight affect your ability to dodge for example?

• I need a new area to go to I think. hunting area for around lvl 30.

• Another thing i thought of. Any way to see status effects in the score sheet?

As to your questions: The definition of pinned is level 50. Level 50 is the highest level you can get through just killing monsters/doing quests.

Equipment augments your skill, but some classes are more equipment based than others. Melee characters, ie. Warriors, rangers, berserkers, need equipment to do damage, reduce damage taken, etc. It doesn't matter if you can bench press two tons if you're using an old rusted dagger to poke your enemies.

On the other hand, mage and communer types use armor and saves(lower is better here too) to protect themselves while they blow up enemies with spells.

Also, weight does NOT affect your ability to dodge, just how much stuff you can carry. Getting bags can help with the weight you carry though, since most of them have some sort of weight reduction. Example: A bag might reduce the weight of that 50 lb. breastplate to 25 lbs(but only when it's in your bag.)

Where you hunt is largely dependent on your group make-up and if you're good/neutral/evil. Ask someone of the same alignment where they might hunt for tips.

As for pills, potions, etc, that's one of those, figure it out for yourself, things. A lot of people have spent years finding out where every consumable in the game is, and what they do. You can find things to cure plague, poison, blindness, give you sanctuary, armor, shield, stone skin, flesh armor, flight and heal you. And that's not even all of them. A good character for learning all these is a cleric. As a cleric you can identify all those consumables, and it's pretty easy-ish to find a group, because healing is so helpful when you're ranking. You could even take the addict perk, so you can smoke all those herbs without the withdrawal killing you.

Lastly, you have 61 lives total, and I've never condeathed a character(and I consider myself at least average) so you don't HAVE to do anything like that, but I hear it helps.

Welcome. I wondered if you had found the forums yet. Think I taught you about practice weapons, and the scarecrow fields.

You've started down a rough road, but FL is such a fun game. Don't give up. We need people just like you.

Mapping some areas is a good start. Do the main areas off the route between Val Marin and Miruvhor first. Most of your fights will happen there. At least mine do. Knowing the start and end of areas seems to be pretty important.

Inquire in game about the various herbs and where they grow. That helped me SO much once I finally learned them all. I'm still missing the haste one. Probably more I don't know about yet.

Timing: Was thinking about asking a vet to write an essay on this. Timing is so very crucial to doing well. Yet its not talked about much except for don't spam commands. Fighting mobs will completely screw up your timing. Let me explain better....

In a PK battle you don't want to execute a command until just before you know its going to be executed. This gives you the ability to react to what happens in game. Your sanc falls so you flee and resanc instead of some other command for example. Practice this even when you are grouped with others and gaining ranks. Fighting mobs gets you into this habit of dirt, ahh it failed, i'll type dirt again. When it comes pk time this gets you killed. You want to dirt, see it failed, know you have two rounds to suck up, see what happens, then decide to dirt or flee/sanc or bash because you have more hp left and the invokers prot shield just fell. If you had dirted, that invoker just bolted and you missed your chance. Hope that makes sense. Some vet write an essay on this please!

Ask lots of questions, here and in game.

Just one small tip: Don't choose addict as a cleric since cure disease helps the addiction...

Welcome! I'm sure if you ask for a hunt with people you can find using the 'who group' command, you will quickly discover good places to hunt. You can't see you affects on the score sheet, but you can use 'affects' to see them.

First, to be begin with, do not worry about con. This is your first character. A ranger is a good choice since you have free pets. You can also tame some aggressive mobs.

Do not camp unless you have camoflaged yourself.

A pinned character means a character who is at his pinnacle - level 50. You cannot go above level 50 in FL.

Do not worry about EQ. What you should worry is about asking questions. MANY of them. Ingame. Find a guy who has a cabal tag before his name savant, warmaster, knight (those should be the ones that HAVE to help you due to their RP) and so on. Start asking him questions. First smaller things, if he keeps answering then he probably has realised you are new and need help, so he will give it. Ask for tips, weapons, armors, tactics, consumables, other classes - EVERYTHING. Ask him to show you places. There are a lot of people who WILL help you ingame, you just have to take the initiative.

A good hunting places for rank 30 goodie are the tombs west of val miran and Elium forest north of val miran. Do not forget to "con " before you attack it.

I don't know if we are allowed to discuss consumables here in the open forum, but a lot of us will explain to you in personal if you ask us in PM.

You can see your affects list by typing "aff". You can also see your affects on your score sheet but you need to switch to the old score sheet by using "autoscore". You can revert between new and old score sheet by using the same command.

I would also suggest to find some people in your PK range and duel (fight in challanges) with them. Make sure the duels are friendly though. You will learn immensely from challanges.

If you are above level 30, you won't gain that much from hunting in Elium or the Tombs of ancients. I would prefer female centaurs (they have ice vuln) in the centaur camp east of Thalos or if you are evil/neutral small men in the labyrinth north-east of Miruvhor.

You will have to type "stat" to see your status. Although, you can add things to your prompt. I always add %t to have the time of the day beside my hp/mana/move (help prompt).

Read help encumberance to see weight limits for monks and blademasters, other classes are just limited by their strength to what weapons they can wield. Explore the elven city north-east of Rheydin to find something better than a normal bag to reduce the weight of what you carry around.

Hunting places depend on align, possible around 30 would be tombs, elium, evergreen/emerald, the labyrinth. Try to find a group or at least one other person to hunt with whenever you can.

As to newbie chat, just send a note to Immortal saying that you are new and would like to keep it and we will grant you access, no matter your title.

Use con+ eq (ask around in game) just before you rank as the amount of hp you get is directly dependant on your con.

It is probably a good idea to play something with the ability to identify first, for the low ranks an adventurer would be a way to go as you can't be pked with one however you can only rank to 30 and start over at 1 once you choose a guild. Adventurers have identify however, so useful for learning your way around. You also keep whatever gear you manage to get as the adventurer when you remort (just non-rares). If you have any specific questions or want tips on fights, log the fights and then post on prayer (saying you want advice and do not want the fight posted in the pk section).

Sorry I wasn't around very long the first two times me and your halfling met. There was sooooo much I wanted to show you, but, I always had to rush off right after you logged on. Hopefully I helped out enough.

1º Have fun. Remember it's a game.

Rangers are a great first class, because you can CAMOFLAGE and hide yourself from other players WHERE command.

Just that you know, a veteram player will be typing WHERE every 3-5 seconds.

Don't forget to sneak/QUIET MOVEMENT so that you can move while under camoflage. No, you cannot see camoflage on your AFFects.

This is why we normaly Master CAMOFLAGE (get it to 100%), so that we do not fail it.

Neat new command for you:

"PROF SELF CAMO"

Chose your ranger path that you like the most. For me I love Archery. IT's so cool.

After 30, if you die to a monster you will lose 10% of your TOTAL EXPERIENCE. Be carefull. Always carry a potion of recall. Or two.

Flee is easy. And you can quaff potion while fighting. You just need to be fast and type: SHEATH + HOLD POTION + QUAFF POTION

Thanks for all the great tips. And for the record, I'm already enjoying the game immensely. Just a curiosity I read about; Rage deleting.. That is when you suicide/delete your character after for instance pk death? So, has it happened that someone has deleted it and then started over with the same name, or is that generally a nono?

When you die, don't do a wear all. Put your equipment back on one piece at a time and identify your tattoo you bought. I used to have them all identified, but I already forgot what they do and lost that ID file a while ago.

tatoos are rot-death

Tattoos you can buy are rotdeath.

Step #1: Play a class with identify.

Step #2: Go to the shop where you buy tattoos.

Step #3: Type 'browse tattoo name

Step #4: Record everything in an ID file.

Thanks for all the great tips. And for the record, I'm already enjoying the game immensely. Just a curiosity I read about; Rage deleting.. That is when you suicide/delete your character after for instance pk death? So, has it happened that someone has deleted it and then started over with the same name, or is that generally a nono?

You aren't penalised by the Staff or Game for this. However, you do lose a character you have likely spent many, many hours putting effort into. This is a huge penalty in itself.

I recommend you make a delpass of random letters/numbers and don't note it down. This prevent deletion. Also, don't be a fool and change your password to this while you are engraged.

Your best bet when angry from a PK death is to simply log off and go kick you cat, hit your wife/children (j/k) or get stuck into your punching bag. It will be far more constructive than either deleting, getting spoken to by IMMs for going on a tirade at whoever killed you or flaming on the forum.

Lytholm, the way tattoos are done in Miruvhor don't allow you to 'list'. Instead,there is a sign, and you have to 'say' the name of the tattoo you'd like.

So, unfortunately, your way won't work.
