The spell protection aids against evil and good?
Ive heard a dark knight when fighting another evil char, used a prot evil consumable, as they get the spell protection they shouldnt need this I would have thought.

The Spell "protection" only protects against the opposed alignment.
But there are scrolls or potions that will grant you "Protection from Evil" "Protection from Good".
This will alow a evil to be protected from evil characters.
And a Good to be protected from good characters. (Used by/against Tribunal. and in duels.)
Protection is a like a mini Sanctuary that will cut damage by a ??? fraction (%).
Sanctuary cuts damage in half, in case you never noticed it.

The reason you never win fights is because you PK around with a trigger to pick up gold from the ground everytime you enter a room. 
Sanctuary cuts damage by half, and protection takes away 1/4 I think.

There's a scroll of 'protection' but no scroll of 'protection evil' or 'protection good'. There IS a potion of each of the opposed ones though.

Because it takes longer time to reach it compared to the potion with protection vs good + it's very often summoned away
