I was thinking halfling/feral/drow/duergar for a thief.... what do you guys think
Thief races
I will only ever play a halfling thief. No idea why, but innate mastery at pry is very nice.
Not to mention the nice dexterity when you miss that steal on a bash happy giant.
yea pry is pretty awesome, but it cant be that hard to master, just find a sleeping mob and plant, pry over and over. I was thinking feral would probably be a good magekiller with gag and fury, but halflings have good magic resist, but the bash vuln is for the loose. drow are pretty amazing at everything, no real downside here, and slith sounds cool because they can shed, but they would probably be mincemeat for blademasters who predict trip. Can backstab be countered?
Unfortunately, yes. Very painful. Drows have a high exp penalty, so ranking takes longer than usual. Ferals have a highly exploitable vuln.
I favour Drow because they train fast (a huge deciding factor for me as I hate training) and their other stats aren't bad at all for a thief. Autosneak is great. Exp penalty makes little difference to me, ranking isn't that hard and the benefits more than make up for it. You're larger than a Halfling (regular human size for Drow, smaller size for Halfling) and have almost as good max dex (24 for Drow, 25 for Halfling) so I'd take the Drow over Halfling anyday at getting away for a bash-happy giant, even though most bashlocks end in tears for thieves.
Thieves require patience and hit & run tactics, slowly ridding your foes of extremely powerful equipment and catching them unprepared with backstabs & traps. In that respect, all races have the potential to make excellent thieves - unlike warrior for example, where there are clear-cut better races than others, all thief races are a lot more balanced against each other (with perhaps the exception of Faerie - I don't see as much potential in a Faerie Thief but perhaps I'm wrong).
They're an amazingly fun class to play and you cannot go wrong at all with any of the races you mentioned, so just go for the one you feel you will enjoy most from a PK & RP standpoint.

Everything Dey said was true. I would basically choose what race to play based on your roleplay choice. You wanna be the greedy little halfling who hoards things or a drow merchant that's out to make a buck? Faerie that needs to support a family, hell all the thief races are good at what they do...I would tend to look at the rp part.
You could play a Faerie Thief, and RP him/her as the Tooth Faerie, going around blackjacking people unconscious and then giving them gold coins in return for their teeth.

EDIT: Screw you, just for that post you made, I'm going to roll a spin-off along the lines of the above. ![]()
I think thats an awesome idea... Too bad Dey thought of it and put it on the forum. If I made that now i'd just be copying. ![]()
Nah, I've just drawn up a character idea based on something completely different that come about because of the tooth fairy idea. I haven't been this excited about a character idea in a long time.
A little part of me just died when I typed that, and realised how sad my existance is. ![]()

Stolen that qoute
does the size of the player matter when it comes to blackjacking? would it be more more difficult for a faerie to blackjack an ogre or giant?
size matters, a lot.

yes, but there are ways to make yourself bigger, certain cabal items and consumables that i have seen.
Ive played a slith thief, an avian thief, a feral thief and they are all good. Thieves pretty much just rock the house. Halfers and Duergars can be great too, but the magic resistance can be tough against other rogues. Undead thief is one of the best, but you can also be rocked by your vuln.
I have a sexy lady vuln. I get rocked by that like, often.

What is the feral cap for dodge and parry? and how bad is their fire vuln? I can't imagine it being a huge vuln if its so easy to access.
103% per, and the fire vuln is pretty bad... >.
