Few questions I have...

Hi everyone.

I've been playing FL for a couple months now and overall it's been a blast. I still get pretty discouraged from time to time due to full loots and insane equipment disadvantages, but I shrug it off the best I can and try again. I had what I thought was a decent RP idea, and plans of applying for a cabal. Unfortunately, my RP required me to kill a predetermined amount of people. Oops, bad idea. Two have fallen, but there was an odd turn of events in both cases and I really can't claim either one. Guess I'm still a virgin :eek:

I can't figure out magic strike, it's mastered and fails 100% of the time. Can I ask why? Well, I just did....can someone tell me why?

There are times when a player disappears from who pk (not a thief, ninja, ranger, etc). Is it because they entered one of those funky black rooms that I can't see out of? I know they are still on because they show up as master questor.

I really wanted to apply for a cabal and see what they were all about. My rp has crashed and burned, and I currently can't pk my way out of a paper bag From things I have read it seems like I'd have to be proficient at one or the other, or both, to have a chance. How true is that?

Is the proper path towards a cabal to join uhm...what are they called..clans?

Hey, let me respond to your questions.

1. Magic strike requires the spells which it casts to be mastered, as per the help. Train the spells that it casts (offensive spells for DK, defensive spells for paladin).

2. If they disappear from who pk but still show up as Master Questor, 9 out of 10 (there are some special exceptions for certain classes), they are probably logged out. Master Questor doesn't update automatically as fast as it should, sometimes. I assume you have detect invis up all the time, right?

3. Generally, getting caballed does require decent RP at the very least; decent PK is important as well, but if you don't have good RP, it'll be difficult to get in. Remember, though, that RP is just how your character acts/reacts; just like reading/writing a novel, just because your character was unable to satisfy his or her original goal doesn't mean the RP has failed.

Think of, say, a good guy trying to save the world, or an evil guy trying to destroy it. If they fail, they don't (usually) say, "Guess that plot failed. Oh, well, no other plans." The failure or success itself inspires them to change and evolve as characters.

1. Yes, you MUST be in a clan in order to be caballed. This is completely unflexible, as it is part of game mechanics.

Ahh, guess I misunderstood what magic strike woud do. I was hoping it would help prevent bashlocks which I'm dying from most of the time. I've seen the spells fire, but they don't help a whole lot when the bashes start piling up.

Try making yourself (bigger/larger) there are a few ways to do it... I shall leave it up to you to find out how...

The PK will come. If your RP is good, and you're trying to PK (even if you lose all the time), your clan Imm will notice.

Basics to get into RP, for me at least, is to focus on one personality quirk or flaw and show it whenever your with anyone. Your character have a habit of muttering to himself? do it all the time, does he/she hate...rocks? enunciate that trait, elaborate on it.

I try to make decisions based on what choices my character would make, not what I would make. Start out with somehting close to you normally in real life and add a twist to it, some creative quirk...you will find after time the character begins to drift away from your origional being on its own.

Rp is just playacting, or creative writing. Its not some magical achievement, its just contributing to the mud environment and immersion that is FL.

Advice for PK? Be prepared! and always have an escape. Go about zones picking up everything you can...you would be amazed at the competitive edge preparation can give you. There are non-rare potions that can make you near immune to many spells, edible items that will grant a slew of things from flesharmor to enlargement. Smokable things alone can give you spells like stone skin (for something I dont think A paladin gets). Look around, keep track and stock up

RP is something that comes with time. In fact my first few months playing here I literally wasn't even RPing, I didn't know where to begin or even how to start. I was mostly familiarizing myself with the game (it took me about a week before I realized how to talk and then a month before I knew I could use ' instead of typing say all the time. Your best bet would be to try and familiarize yourself first if you haven't already gotten at least the major areas (ranking areas and paths to them as well as cities) memorized. From there you can at least begin to start working a bit better on everything else.

Cabals are a bit of a mix between RP and PK. Some Cabals though are more RP than anything else (Herald) while others are more PK focused (Syndicate). Just because you don't have top notch PK though doesn't mean you wont be able to get into any of the Cabals, as long as your RP is on par. Some people use pmotes/emotes/smotes to RP as well as change the way their characters talk. This can all be a part of your RP and overall character development. Take little things like your perk on creation as your possible RP point. I had a Gnome Invoker in Savant who went Sickly perk and ended up incorporating it into his description as well as his RP. Not so much as in wheezing all the time and such as I have seen some people use, but more like a rash that was always itching. If your RP gets stale, you can always freshen it up with something new and go in that direction. Just because you have one part of RP doesn't mean you can't add to something later to flesh him out more and make him more interesting.

As for those rooms you can't see out of and such, they're basically rooms that you can't summon things in, leave through magical means, or even be able to get there through magical means. Basically you have to hot foot it yourself to those places in order to get there.

Seeing as most people have answered the other questions, I have one comment about your last one. Cabals were not designed to be just for the elite, nor is it fun to play with a completely elitist attitude toward joining them. I think the trend that has formulated over time where people don't want to try being caballed because they 'aren't good enough' is unfortunate. If you want to join a cabal, just join the clan and stick with your character.

Join your clan, listen to your clan members advice, and if you follow the help files that tell you the basic guidelines for how you should act (ie not blatantly going against the RP/purpose of the clan), your cabal imm will notice you and 9/10 will reward you. It is everyone's responsibility to help those new to the game, and the 'sink or swim' attitude many people have pushes a majority of new players away from the game. Any new player I see, especially in my cabal but even in enemy cabals, I will find a way to make it work with my RP to give them tips, help them, whatever is necessary within the bounds of RP and rules.

With all of my past cabal elders, I have always picked the candidate who is inexperienced but is willing to try over someone who is decent but complacent(ie, deleting out of shame, or a sense of failure, when they die). Not only do I think it is necessary for the continuation and growth of this game, but I always find dealing with a new player a refreshing experience.

I would actually strongly recommend that you don't join the Academy, and subsequently Herald.

It is a hardcore, elitist PK organization, that demonstrates almost no RP, as dictated by the stringent PK requirements. Unless you can stand up to some of the toughest opponents Aabahran has to offer, you should stick with something easier. Herald is not for the faint of heart.

I can vouch for the PK not being top notch. Rp is one of the most important elements in this game, not saying Pk is not important, with that you can get alot of "things" for such.

I know I am not the best at Pking probably the worst , or one of them, but what helps me in this games is the fact I try and Rp. All of my good chars have been because of RP and not of Pk, and if you wish to become better at pk you can try your luck with cabals. Most cabal except Herald have some sort of Pk aspect to it. Since vendettas, which are the opposing cabals for another cabal, are required to fight each other or at least defend when it comes to good vs good.

Also if you do not know what needs to be done for a cabal just ask the highest ranked Member on what is expected, most of the time they shall tell you what is expected and and such.

My advice; Wait with cabals, until you AT LEAST are not a virgin in PK. Because Cabal life is tough.

Cabal warfare is while fun, VERY brutal, and you cant run away from your enemies here...if someone is attacking your cabal guard, the only option for you is to go and defend, even if you know you will die and be fully looted...

The point is arguable, but yes.. Cabal warfare can be extremely brutal.

Cabal Warfare, depending on the Cabal (Herald is for pansies) can make the "virgin" player condie within two weeks. That is, if you log on at all and take the beatings with some insight and learning. I'm afraid the only way to get good at pk is to fight a lot of people with different classes and different races. Eventually, you will learn much through this perseverance and if you stick to it, you will be rewarded.

I guess I'll just give you some standard advice. Make friends IG. It's very important when you're new. Make a friend, and they will teach you a lot, and when you are their friend, then do not be afraid to ask whatever you want. Sure, maybe they will know you're new, but they'll lend a hand. Also, when you're new, it's a good idea to join a newbie friendly clan; hope, battle, hourglass (to an extent) and sacred oak are generally the best to help you.
