Trip Size

Since bash works better when you're larger than your opponent, people often enlarge themselves before combat. However, since trip works better when your smaller, why do you never hear of people shrinking themselves prior to fighting, say, a FG Cleric? Wouldn't that make the mythological "trip-lock" easier to foist on him/her?

EDIT - Just read the help file; "Tripping large creatures is generally not a good idea"? I must be wrong about all of this.

I'm not sure this is true.

I thought I'd heard that, but maybe I just assumed it was the opposite of bash.

I think there may be something to it, but maybe not. I remember a few fights with Durlar where I was vs a giant size enemy, I got shrunk, and I tried to triplock. Didnt really work.

You'd think tripping large creatures would be a good thing. When you're as big as a house, it's going to take a while for you to get back on your feet.

On the other hand, tripping large creatures generally seems like a very good idea to me, which is completely contrary to the helpfile. Kind of weird. I wonder if it's dex related instead of size?

Trips is the black sheep of the laggings skills.

Its like bash and bodyslam are giants, and trip is the little dwarf brother.

I think trip used to affect big time giants. But it was changed. I never seen trip lag a giant more than a human.

On other end, just look at a giant bashing a faerie...

So old adage of shrinking yourself to prevent trips no longer works that well.

Size is like Vampiers. Overpowering.

You are all wrong! Haha!

Think of it like this.

Scenario 1) Big giant man comes and bashes you HARD! Your gonna hit the floor hard and take longer to get up.

Scenario 2) Guy the same size as you comes and bashes you. You fall down and get up normally.

Now for the craziness.

Scenario 1) A guy your size trips you. You fall down. Get back up.

Scenario 2) A little midget trips you. You fall down. Get back up.

See whats going on here? This is all I should have to say.

And yes, trip does lag giants a lot.

I realize that dex has more to do with it, it says that in the helpfile. But, it also says you shouldn't trip those larger than you. Is that a red herring?

"The bigger they are, they harder they fall."

Think of tripping a big guy that fell on you. I honestly think the helpfile is just trying to say something along those lines, but does a bad job. It is a bit misleading.

Tripping a large creature is a bad idea, but it's a bad idea for the large creature, not for you. I understand.

Its based on the person who is being tripped size only. Not the person tripping.

A stone giant will trip lock an ogre as easily as a halfing.

Personally, I would have though that it would be based on both but it isn't.

So I guess the consensus is to be as big as possible, and fly.

Looks like it, flying fire giant zerks for everyone!

Virigoth said there was no upside to being shrunken.
