The newest of newbie questions

Erm, how do I connect? I've looked at your stie and the mud connector, and I can only find these two numbers; '216.136.9.8' and '1848'. I assumed these were the host name and port respectively, but I'm not having any luck. Obviously i'm being very stupid because you all managed it, but I'm eager to try this out, so any help would be much appreciated. I'm using Gmud, if that's of any relevance...

Well, you're right, those two numbers are the hostname and port. But currently, the MUD is down, so we're just awaitin' on Behrens (The Big Boss) to get us back online. Nobody can connect at the moment.

Haha, sorry bro but you picked the one day that the mud is actually down. I'm sure if you hang around our forums for a little bit you'll find that we have a good community and you'll also know the exact moment the mud comes up because we are all addicts.

While you're waiting, read the essays on all the different classes, plus survival guides and whatnot, it'll give you an idea of what you want to play when the mud is up.

best starter character? human cleric. no exp penalty means easier ranking, you can heal yourself, identify items, survive a bit easier. making it good increases your survival too. just rank up to about 20 or so, and walk everywhere. sure, you'll die a lot, to mobs and the odd trash PKer, but you'll learn the lay of the land and a bit about equipment. once you feel a little bit more sure, rank 10 levels and explore some of those areas you missed. then 10 more, and so on. don't worry if you don't reach 50 with it, or have a record of 0-50 either. your first character will be a learning one. take notes of items, make maps, log fights, everything. ASK QUESTIONS. unless it is quest-sensitive, we can answer anything you need to know. we'll help you get in the swing in no time.

oh, yeah, and get zMud. much better, IMO.

Good solid advice there. But in my opinion, your first character should be whatever you like the sound of the most. If you don't like the playstyle of a cleric and you roll one for your first, you will likely get frustrated and delete. You will learn a ton more getting a race/class you love to fifty than you would playing a class you didn't have your heart in to play, to thirty and then deleting.

And Iusedtobesomebody is right when he says you'll die a lot, if you're new to MUDding or to FL. Take it in your stride and learn from your mistakes, and you're all set.

I'm with Dey. I think the human cleric thing should go like fourth character or so, when you want to settle down and Learn Stuff.

we all have our opinions, and that's okay. you can make whatever you want. but dying all the time (even though it is the best teacher) can frustrate people. the survivability of the cleric makes journeying a lot easier. way to heal yourself? check. way to identify objects? check. way to recall yourself if you meet a angry, nasty mob in a dark alley? check. no penalty to make ranking quicker (especially when you don't know where to rank)? check. shrug seems a good intro character to me.

Dont be too distraught though, thid mud has a very good and consistent reputation of having very few connectivity issues..from my experience.

True neutral ogre warrior is a good starter, lots of hp, quick healing, group with anybody, dirt kick, all weapons. And also when you're neutral, most people won't attack you without good reason.

BMG. Jump straight into the fire and learn. Sure it's like cliff diving, but hey, you'll hit the water. Maybe.

Yes, I'm serious there, but Deykari has some good advice in my opinion. "Your first character should be whatever you like the sound of the most." The more fun you have, the better your chances of sticking with it and learning.

Yeah...I agree with the above post. Starting should be like cliff diving. Just start out with a character you feel suits your likes, or like me, find a character you think you can own anyone in such as el ninja! And then get your butt handed to you repeatedly until your thick skull receives some lessons learned. Then try other classes and races, try to rp a bit, and whamo! You'll be a pro in no time...I think?:confused:

I'm not like the others.

I reccomend a cleric/paladin/healer to learn the layout of the world/eq with and the very, very simple basics with before jumping into pk. While it is best to jump headfirst into pk I don't think a first char is ready to jump into pk unless they are already an experienced mudder.

Oh, wait, I do agree with Dey saying you should just plat what's fun.

This game would rock so much more if people did this rather than calculating powerhouses before rolling.

I just don't agree with first char being warrior/bmg. Way too training dependent and/or dependent on potions/herbs.

Very true and an excellent choice.

Good clerics were intended with one purpose, and that was to help starters. I actually got summoned by viri and chueh when i first started playing, and was shown a few things about them.

My suggestion would be a human good cleric as well.

Sure, there is merit to making what sounds cool, but you will learn little to nothing about items, weapons, and the like. You will not have a recall commune in case you get in to trouble. You will not have a portal to get away from the higher pkers. You won't be able to make food and water while you explore.

Adventurer is great, but I didn't learn to pk by having a shield on me. I learned by being on edge.

I just need to learn to type "who pk" instead of "who kp" so the immortals don't pick on me anymore. It used to be one specific imm, but another one hopped on the band wagon when I spammed who kp about eight times.
