Help file says thirty, but obviously that's wrong, as I had a groupmate at 25 that was a shaman. What's the real rank to become one? 25?

You can become one at level 25, or level 30. Nothing before, in between, or after.

Azraeth lowered it to 25 some time ago for healers and shamans in order to help more to learn to play the classes.

And to clarify Chayesh's statement, even though it may help some learn more about the classes, there is no blatant advantage or disadvantage to becoming a healer/shaman at rank 25 over rank 30. Except, of course, for harder ranking, since both classes have crappy skills until higher levels, whereas a cleric can at least do something.
It's 5 less ranks of being bored to tears ranking a cleric.
Amen to that, Chayesh. Clerics are soooo boring.
Until you get to level 50 that is. I love clerics, good or evil.
