Is it considered against the multi-ing rule to log off and onto a different char for RP reasons? Say, you spot six of another char's friends all playing tag, and you want in, but the one you have logged in would just eat them all?

It's amazing how often some of that still happens. Of course it could be sheer coincedence but I highly doubt it.
I personally see nothing wrong with logging on a good level 20, seeing nobody around to group with, noticing that your evil level 20 has some people he could group with, and so logging onto him after you can log off the good. Yeah, it's OOC knowledge, but some levels of OOC are acceptable when it comes to that kind of thing. I AM against what Chayesh said, logging on a lowbie just to check "who" and quit, or dying, quitting, and logging on someone to kill that guy. But sometimes you'll be on one char, notice someone's on who another char NEEDS to talk to (IMMs, cabal leaders, etc.), and switch then... I've got no problem with that either.
Now, of course, if the IMMs don't hold this point of view, please let me know.
I know this is pretty crappy but when I had access to wiznet and I noticed a lowbie log off and a high ranked char log on and it was someone who had applied for knight or something like that I'd immediately go wizi and snoop them. If they weren't disappointed that I was gone shortly after they logged on or went into some rp or pk with someone else then I became vis again to see what they wanted or whatever. I was just about as sorry a god as I am now a mort....hehe.
What became ridiculous is that people keep lowbie-under 10 characters to log on and check for certain people or cabals/enemies of their pinns.
It was quite the recurring theme and began to really bug.
It's no different now I think. One caballed char logs on, then right soon after vendetta caballed char does. I know sometimes it can be happenstance but I'm also fairly certain that sometimes it's a lowbie seeing that pinn on and looging his pinn on shortly after. Maybe just not as prevalent as it used to be.
Some muds only allow people to have on character at a time.
To me this is both very good and very bad.

Heck no. I have six characters at the moment, four of which are above lvl 35. I cannot focus on only one character, I'd be deleting it every day.
So true. I've got 13, at least. But I know that's a little crazy.
When I used to play all the time, I had over 30 usualy. Most of which were over lvl 35. 
I had no life.
48,30,27, three sub 20s. If you get bored or frustrated with your main, you need something to distract yourself.
If I have a character at pinn, I usually can't play any other characters. I try, but I get to about 5th rank or so, then delete because I'd rather be playing at pinn. Which means if I'm annoyed or frustrated on my pinn, I log and go throw tables at people on half-life 2.
I would tend to agree with Pali about the logging in with different characters. I think logging in on a rank 1 char just to see if any new players/players who are going to give you a whipping are on is a bit silly. Suck it up and log your pinn..

Yeah, I don't even get the motive behind that. With a pin, you're pretty much done. I mean, you've achieved your major goal, in most cases. So, the only thing that' left is to have fun. Just log on whenever you want.
