General moan

Hey peeps

I was asked by someone to go somewhere,it was not on a map.

Everytime I find that I cant find the place I am looking for , I stumble into a lair of some sort, and am fireballed to oblivion.

Then when I find myself back in the land of the living. I look at my score, and low and behold ANOTHER 10,000 exp points are lost. I dont see how you can find places that you have never heard of, when you have no idea which direction to take.

I usualy pick a rough area, and explore to no avail untill I am toast..

Anyone else have this happen to them, or is it just that I am a crap navigator? (no comment on the last bit.)

Any way, thanks for reading my moanings...

I'd suggest don't explore. You'll find enough groups that take you places you haven't been on your way to 50. THEN go explore, and if you die it won't matter, not to mention being able to blast to oblivion a good portion of the things out there. And then, there's always the map that was just posted (in the general discussion, I think.) Or, make friends with a healer, then git him/her to resurrect you if you tragically die.

Resurrection will erase some, if not all, of your experience loss usually.

I saw the Map.

Thanks Grannym4n, my questions are answered.

When I first started similar things happened to me. Wandered into the Kaddar faeries at level 10, a few dragons, a dracolich. Then I became pkable, and not only did I wander into more dragons, a cabal guard or two, some minotuars but random people who ended me without blinking.

I called them learning experiences, you learn where to go and not go and eventually the layout of the world.

Try asking them where it is, IC.

Been there, done that. A lot of times. It even happened today. But for everytime you step into one of those mean dudes, thats one more place you know not to go to before you got a high rank. Dont give up!

Just be glad cabal guards aren't aggro against everyone like they were in 1.0... now THOSE sucked to wander into while exploring as a newb. I kept accidently running into the Warmaster and Hunter guards... SO annoying.

Been there, done that. Ouch.

I think one command that most people don't know about and helps a lot with exploring is the

look sky

command. It tells you what area you are in, this combined with the lore skill, which will tell you which area the item you are loreing comes from is very helpful.

but as always, if you don't know where something is, ask someone. Typically newbie chat is a great place to ask, but if you're above level 10, then ask someone sitting around town, but ask them, don't demand them. I'll just give people bull**** answers if they say 'Tell me where the chasm is.' But if they ask me 'Do you know the direction towards the chasm' I will say, "North through the Holy Grove(or whatever it is now), continue north through the forest banor(I think) and you are at the onset of the chasm.'

It's easier to get answers out of people if your questions aren't to specific, but the problem is if they aren't specific enough, you won't get much help, so it's a give and take game.

Join the academy and don't be afraid to ask questions.

I have just started using look sky a bit more, and it does help alot.

Unless you're in a cave.

Yeah, then you just walk around going 'where ' and when you don't see him, you're out of the area.

Part of the learning process. My first character I took a ton of mob deaths like that. Also some mobs are aggressive only against lower level characters, so it will get less bad after you rank up--on the other hand you're vulnerable to PKs at that point. Always plenty to worry about, thank Virigoth.

Another useful command is 'exits'. It tells you the name of the rooms around you.

For example, just as a bit of advice, if the room is called 'Firedeath', you might want to make sure you are prepared before entering it

I went into that room once by accident. I was also leading two others, they were pissed and I quickly found out why!

That reminds me of the times I was exploring the high tower of magic. Twice I've stepped through that portal and become trapped. The first time it was because there was no apparent exit to the area, but that was all right, because I was an invoker and recalled. The second time I was a monk and transported to an area far above my level. I actually managed to get a healer to come and help me, but I declined his offer of recall, because I wanted to explore. Needless to say, that decision got me killed, and because I couldn't get back there, I lost my stuff. . .

The lesson is to not explore at low levels, and don't explore without being able to cast a transportation spell (word of recall, some form of gate, portal, maybe teleport).

Or have a few recall potions in your bag...

scanning is good when you are in a new area. hard to tell what mobs that are agressive, but if you are not sure you can at least quaff a vial before you go in.
