I was just killed (i'm level 12 with around 400xp to level, and when i died it shot me up to 5000. Is this right? Last i remembered it it was more like 1000 for your first death and it would build like that?
Did they revamp it or something or is it a mistake?
No mistake, there's a formula it runs by.
PRICE OF DEMISE
You lose experience points for dying to mobiles but not to other
players. The amount you lose is 10% of your total experience. Death is
to be avoided. The Healer spell Resurrection has ability to negate all
effects of death including experience and condition as well as constitution
loss.
The higher your exp penalty for the race/class, the more exp you lose.

I would die all the time with mychar and i wouldnt get anything near this amount of xp debt.
or has i just been oblivious all this time?

And it's only mobdeaths, not PKs. PKs have no xp penalty.
