Start with a crap weapon, wait for cleaves before lagging yourself with anything other than flamestrike. Tbh after reading this again it really seems like you were ahead. Play the attrition game with him.
Dwek, be more aggressive. Dirt kick more often.
Daggers can be cleaved, as Theodas I collected a crap ton of low lvl shields and daggers, but he cleaved even my daggers in half. So, everything can be cleaved.

Should include giants wielding a 2h in one hand.
