Ninja Titles

Have you been sitting on the edge of your seat waiting for the next thread by Celerity? Has Behrens been itching to implement my latest idea? This idea is the main reason I haven’t had any ideas lately…this one took me FOREEEEEEVVVVVVVVEEEEEEEEERRRR (more time than my research papers and projects for finals ). Anyways, what this thread is about is first a translation and thoughts on the current ninja titles. After that, there is a suggested list of replacement titles based on meaning, ninja skill acquisition, and more ‘correct’ Japanese. Finally, this translation has been done to all of the ninja-only skills/spells too. At the end, there is a reference of all the current skills/spells of the ninja class.

The general point being that there are a whole lot of crappy ninja titles right now (as you’ll soon read), and a change to better Japanese (or if you want, simply back into straight English) would make FL more unique and enriched.

A title like: “Master of the Atemi Waza” is a strange mix of both English and Japanese, especially when “master” is used in Japanese (Shinan/Shihan) for later titles.

Please enjoy all of my hard work here! Remember, I don't claim that everything is 100% correct...I tried very hard, but I am no native speaker/scholar of archaic Japanese...

-CURRENT NINJA TITLES AND DEFINITIONS
Format:
Rank Male_Title *** Female_Title
Definition
1 Uke *** Uke
Reception. This title has the meaning of “xx the practice dummy” or “xx the receiver of blows”.
2 Tori *** Tori
Bird. There may be another meaning that I am not aware of/cannot find.
3 White Belt *** White Belt
4 Yellow belt *** Yellow Belt
5 Green Belt *** Green Belt

7 2nd Brown *** 2nd Brown
8 1st Brown *** 1st Brown
9 3rd Black *** 3rd Black
10 2nd Black *** 2nd Black
The belt system wasn’t used in Japanese martial arts until they started to be publicly taught and also for the reason of standardizing martial arts tournaments. Furthermore, the belt system, PAST BLACK BELT, ascends, not descends. 1st Black is a new black belt, and 10th black is a very influential one. I recommend that the belt system be removed, replaced with the Japanese name equivalents, or replaced with my suggestions!

Striking techniques that are normally used in conjunction with grappling and throwing techniques. Waza means “technique”.

23 Master of Kansetsuwaza *** Mistress of Kansetsuwaza

http://www.ijf.org/corner/qCornerView.php?Page=1&MenuCode=JT&Idx=12

http://www.judoinfo.com/gokyo.htm
40 Entrance to Owaza *** Entrance to Owaza
41 Novice of Owaza *** Novice of Owaza
42 Student of Owaza *** Student of Owaza

44 Master of Owaza *** Mistress of Owaza
Large techniques. Should be o waza. These are filler titles as far as I can see.
http://www.auskf.info/main/articles.htm
45 Menkyo *** Menkyo
Menkyo is just a license. This title doesn’t really make sense to me. Bearer of the license maybe.
46 Sensei *** Sensei
Sensei means teacher! Could be further clarified with ninjutsu no sensei. (teacher of ninjutsu). Usually mid-ranked black belts today.
47 Shinan *** Shinan
Supreme instructor. This is given to highly ranked black belts in today’s systems.
48 Shihan *** Shihan
The best example. This is a difficult word to translate. The model teacher is another possibility. Reserved for the highest authorities today.
49 Kaiden *** Kaiden
Highest ranking member of the Menkyo system.
50 Master of the Miyama Ryu *** Mistress of the Miyama Ryu
The school of three mountains. It is a type of “combat jujutsu” out of New York City. This style is not Japanese at all. Disappointing…

TSUNI OWATAaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!   (finished at last!)

well done, I say do it!

Holy Crap...How long did it take you to comprise all of this?

BTW, I love it.

i'm for it.

Rank 23 is a brand of lady's lingerie.

I really like the titles, and it's obvious you've put a lot of time into the research and whatnot.

The whole "body part" naming convention made me chuckle though, I wonder where the hell those titles came from.

Dey

Very very very very nice

Sheesh, I thought the title said Ninja -Turtles-.....

Speaking of which, has anyone seen the trailer for the new TMNT?

Very well done on the research and the knowledge you made available, though I would prefer to see ninja title replaced with assassin like ones ie watcher or something similar. Also some of them titles are pretty long and isnt it better to only know what ninjitsu technique has been choosen from fighting said ninja. But damn good job on it, and I hope I dont come across being petty, I dont like any of the ninja titles, present and with your suggestions, I would prefer titles similar to thieves. (sorry, but thats just me).

Some of those titles are names of my Shotokan Karate Katas. Other than that I think it would just su*k to type in 'metsubushi' every single time I want to blind. Good job. Pretty accurate titles there. You have no life.

Other than that I think it would just su*k to type in 'metsubushi' every single time I want to blind.

You wouldn't have to though. Do you type 'bodyslam Deykari' evertime you want to bodyslam Deykari, or do you type 'bod dey'? It would be as simple as typing 'met' or 'mets' or whatever.

Dey

For as long as I have been training, Uke is the one the move is being done on, Tori is the one doing the move.

I'm a big fan of Koshi and Harai/Yama, a couple of my favorites throws.

WC

Lots of good work, but I think we should scrap the Asian influence to FL as a whole, since it is mostly based on Western mythology, etc. Assassin would be nearest to Western, which would allow for a few more additions to the class making them more like swashbuckling cut-throats and ...well, not "Ninjas". Just my thoughts on the matter.

I like the assassin idea better myself. Or i would like to see things mirrior dnd and put assassin as a qclass . Ninja should be changed for samurai and assassinate should be taken away and given to assassin.

I'm a bit peeved..lost my entire reply. Here we go again:

One Way Up: Many, many, many hours. I have no idea how many...more than 25 at least. Of course, a lot of that time is spent getting sidetracked reading about the stuff. Talking to some Japanese friends, I had to avoid embarassing myself asking about such a nerdy topic and even they don't really know the vocabulary (very very old). Also, a lot of the things I can't just directly translate, due to the way languages work. If I translate death kiss into Japanese, it has no meaning. Also, a lot of reorganization and redoing things many times.

Deykari: Maybe I'm misunderstanding you, but a google of the current and new rank 23 titles didn't turn up anything.

Sirax + CruelEdict + BobcatFan: I really don't want to derail this thread to a topic about whether or not ninja should be in the game. There is a huge thread on that already. Please not here. This idea is just the translation and replacement of the current ninja titles to showcase how poorly written they are.

Sirax: Compare the title lengths:

Sara the Handmaiden of the Nameless

Sara the Onmitsukoudou no Soushou

It just seems longer because you can't understand the individual words. Japanese word formation is different than the English way, so individual 'words' tend to be a little longer but have more meaning. Tabeteiru is one word (verb) that is a complete sentence and says (I am) eating now.

Being able to see the ninjutsu technique is the same as the crusader rank 50 titles being able to see the signature technique. I'd like to see this incorporated for all 'signature' choices (warrior lore, ranger lore, thief mechanism, etc).

Questioner: I don't know anything about Shotokan Karate, and I'm not sure if you referring to the new or current ninja titles. The similarity may be due to using a common vocabulary to describe fighting, movement, etc. You'll see punch, kick, side, throw, etc, a lot regardless of the fighting style.

Like Dey said, you can use the short form to input the command. Moreover, we already use Japanese/other language vocab in the game (blm stances, ikazuchi, mana, chii, etc).

WC: Thanks for the tip on Tori/Uke . I'm sure you do love your throws, but you have to see that titles currently translate into:

Bob the Elbow

Bob the Scoop Throw

CruelEdict: Assassin is Middle Eastern, not Western. This is for another thread...

BobcatFan: Renaming blademaster (I assume you mean this rather than ninja?) to samurai is going the OTHER direction. Ninja to samurai makes it more inaccurate, both in vocabulary and representation, while not solving the 'Eastern influence problem' at all.

No, scrap ninja, create samurai, move lots of ninja abilities plus more assassin type things toward qquest assassin

Oh well, its getting way off topic and I am sorry. You did alot of great work and thats what is important.

Scrap ninjas, put cowboys and indians.

No' date=' scrap ninja, create samurai[/quote'] Blademaster.

I'm sure you do love your throws, but you have to see that titles currently translate into:

Bob the Elbow

Bob the Scoop Throw

Yeah, the titles make no sense, I agree, the comment was just a stupid off tangent.

WC

That would be awesome. I want a lazer gun instead of a 6-shooter. Oooh oooh! Qrace alien.

I've always wanted to create a human thief and qrace him 'rat'...
