I noticed a big lack of posting on his part.

Best advice I have is for keeping spells up, use the affects list mod thing. I forget what it's called and can't connect right now, but the one that allows you to set specific spells for specific three letter names in a set place on your aff list. I'm sure there is a help file for it
And if you have a mudclient that is able to print text independent of the game (i.e. so you can send a message to screen like ===== TERRASHIELD DOWN ===== without having to send it through a tell or other comm channel) that helps too.

Wield a no-disarm staff.
Dance a big axe or polearm.
I think there's a pretty good case to be made for sword+shield, if you have a great shield.
You don't get shield block though. So I can think of only two (maybe three) shields that might be considered 'worth while'.
Honestly, I might go more sword/held item. There's a lot of junk out there that's really good to hold, plus you could hold a sanc/recall/fly/etc. item, in case you get in trouble.
I would rather have a nodisarm sword than a disarmable staff any day, but yeah I can only think of 3 shields that I would want over a cursed staff also. As for held items...eh...I never really knew too much about held items, there's only one I can think of offhand that I would use. Don't hold sanc staves, that's what aliases are for.
Aliases don't prevent steal. Also, if I'm running around, looking for someone, I'll hold the sanc item so I can use it, then switch to whatever I want to hold right before combat.

Both. Different circumstances. Figure out what times you might want different set-ups.
