What now to progress further?

I've sorta hit a wall in my progress of learning all the equipment. I think I have made good progress in learning quite a lot of the mediocre rares. Also, I have explored almost all of the lesser areas as well as I can, logging everything I've been coming across.

Finding the locations of the better weapons has proven to be a much more difficult task than finding armor. Locating and exploring has revealed next to nothing.

It seems to me I need to now learn gear, discord, desolation, faction of magic, blood, and the rest of steel. And whatever other uber areas I haven't yet heard about.

How far can I realistically get through these areas solo? So far I've gone part way through gear and the faction of magic. Had to bail on magic due to a shift, man I was unhappy.

I'm also questioning if it is even going to be much of a benefit since I assume much of the equipment won't be in there either. The overall knowledge of the area will be useful, but that isn't what I'm after.

So...what did all of you do to move to the next level? I've been trying to whore myself out for equipment trips, but that hasn't gone well.

It would really help me out if you vets would just remove all, drop all and sac everything. Then come see me to help you re-equip How about it eh? Pretty please?

This is about the same spot I've been stuck in for a long time. And when I get involved enough with a char... something comes up and I have to give FL a break... for school, some vacation, probably school again...

Sometimes I get good eq from pking those who CAN find it, but that isn't nearly as useful...

Make a ranger, go archery.

If you cant figure it out from there, you have alot more to learn..heh.

Also, lots of good weapons are not in those areas.

The challenge is the weapon being there when you happen by the mob. Another thing you can do is have a lore class and kill the people with the good weapons. Though that can be a much bigger challenge.

post bounties on the crazy hard to kill people that piss you off, then find out what their gear does when you get a little bag. I wouldn't recommend bountying evryone around, but def. capitalize on the ones you cant.

While that is a decent idea, it doesn't do anything towards learning what mob carries the item. At most you can learn what area it comes from. If lore was changed to reveal area and mob, then it would be useful.

Thank you for the suggestion Mya, I may have to try that next if my stone ranger archer can't make it through.

Some suggestions taken from what I used to do when I was new:

  1. Ask the person who is holding the rare if you can identify it. Do not say it like that though, try: "Ah, that is an excellent trinket you possess, perhaps you will allow me to examine it for but a moment?". This requires that the other person trusts you, but most players I encountered would allow me to identify their whole sets.

  2. Ask the person who is holding the rare where they got it from. "Which creature did you best to attain this armor/necklace/ring/et cetera?" and "Perhaps you can lead me to this creature some day? I would pay handsomely for such knowledge!"

I think there is a misconception about learning about rares and abilities: You know, the whole "Vets are trying to hoard their knowledge" thing. We, the Staff, do not allow people to give out these types of information on the forum because we are -hoping- that people will find these things out in game. That is, we are hoping that players interact with each other to gain knowledge about the game! From what I have seen, most players within the confines of the game are more than happy to share that information.

To be honest this is 100% true. A while ago I knew nothing.. Absolutely nothing about eq. I went on trips and didnt take a thing and I learnt.

Most of the 'vets' wouldnt actually hold this information back. Hell if someone asks most people where they got that they will probably tell you, (within RP reasonability, if im a popous DK I'll tell you to mind your own business maybe.)

Hell its pretty bad to give out quest information but I still do it, I know what its like to sit in the sanctuary of contraptions for 16 IRL and get NO WHERE. Without Daemain (sp?) I know I would STILL be stuck in there. But the knowledge was shared and passed on because I asked - and I have passed it on to many after me, clan members, cabal members ect...

Ask and you will recieve. And if you don't? Ask someone else? Eventually someone will give you an answer. If the knowledge is sought enough, there will be a way to gain it.

Bored cabaled players are a prime choice of information.

That spelled it out quite well for me thanks. Unfortunately for me it means that the only real problem I have with the game will never change. I simply want to be able to explore the game thoroughly on my own and gain the knowledge I need to be able to play. But instead, I have to do that to learn the areas, AND then start questioning everyone about equipment for the next few months before I feel like I can begin to play.

I'd say if I spent the next few months doing the above I'd finally feel like I had enough knowledge to begin an actual character that I could get into and develop some RP with.

What drew me here was how awesome the PK was, and I knew that I would have to grow into the RP side once I had sufficient knowledge of the game. I was all for it, and looking foward to it.

One suggestion before I start deleting:

Please tell all newbies that come here that they won't find the vast majority of equipment held by players through exploration and that they will HAVE to query people to find the information they want.

FL rocks, it really does. It is so close to the perfect mud for me. However, being forced to ask questions and not being able to get the info on my own through exploring is too big of a killer.

Truthfully, I feel the only thing the above does is drive new players to seek an OOC contact that will help them out.

maybe you need a single player RPG that is not played online? the whole point is to enjoy the various forms of interaction...pk, rp, etc...

If you feel this way, then I'd say FL is not the place for you. The only reason I know anything about this game is from asking questions of other players. I'd recommend you find a power-gamer PK-only mud then.

In which case, you're still not getting the info on your own, so what's the difference? You may as well ask in game.

Post Scriptum - if my attitude about this seems very cavalier, here is why:

  1. You posed a potential problem: You could not find equipment to identify on the Mobiles, and you could not find the location of said mobiles. I gave two possible and reasonable solutions. You rejected them.

  2. FL promotes interaction between players - it is a basic tenet of the MUD. It is the reason why groups of three are given more experience than a solo person. Your response indicates unwillingness to interact.

Invokers are always nice to have on trips. I know for a fact a solid bmg+invoker can do most of the factions, and with a cleric and maybe a melee, gear. My gnome voker and the ogre ranger tribby(forgot the name), did deso/discord(can't remember which), by ourselves, twice.

Oh, and anyone can use a bow. Mobs chase.

And then people complain about there not being enough rp... sigh...

RP IS interaction people. You can't play a mud completely on your own.

I am quite terrible at RP myself so interacting IG can be difficult at times. However I would just create different characters and pinn them and roll with them for a while, naturally developing a bit of a RP link with other players. Next thing you know on char A you visit Gear once or twice and maybe Dischord. Not everything will be in, but on char B you happen to go back and voila a new item is there that was not on the first. And this just snowballs and snowballs until before you know it the only things you do not know of at items implemented in the time you spend away:rolleyes:

Let me just remind eveyone that this IS a game. For pure enjoyment. But what makes this so much different from other games is that you gain so much more enjoyment through the interactions between other genuine imagined characters. Imagine how much fun Halo would be if that were possible.
