Learning to PK.

What do you think would be a good combo to learn to PK on? My last characters were Bards and Healers, so that gives you some idea of my PK "expertise".

Bards can be great pkers, but I'd go with something else first to learn the ropes on. I vote thief, for learning the all importance of herbs, and for fighting many different classes, while still being able to hide to survive. Failing that...maybe a dark-knight, for the sheer aggressiveness. DK will teach you the importance of tactics, as well.

I was thinking FG warrior. Would I be totally in the wrong for that?

I would say a paladin, or a warrior.

I recommend a bmg.

Bmgs are strong to very-strong against a variety of classes (everything except invokers, clerics, and shaman) and re-equipping isn't hard at all. They require training, but not overly so. They are also easy to rank.

They allow good practice in spell management and lack a lag ability, so you learn how to get that last blow in. They use scrolls, staves, and wands, so you can learn where and what consumables are useful. Their spell range is nice in that you don't need to constantly supplement yourself (warrior, etc) to stay aware and fairly safe.

I recommend Knight or Tribunal. Faerie/gnome/drow depending on your align.

edit: FG-war is pretty much bottom tier at this point...not a good thing to learn with. You will be frustrated by everything from clerics (natural warrior killers---x2 against fires) to mages to even other melees. It worked in the past, but I (the fg-war player) wouldn't play them now seriously. If you want a melee char, blms or rangers are more versatile.

celerity cleric

Viri always recommended DK's.

I'd go with a DK. I have only played one, though, it's really hard for me to get into evil-esque roleplay. But DKs are a great class to learn with from what I gather.

DK is a good choice, but i think i might recommend paladin and here's why:

  1. not nearly as reliant on consumables as DKs (no vials, prot, armor)

  2. you will learn to chase as you can't lag lock reliably

  3. much more survivable so you can live to fight another day (and READ LOGS)

  4. you will learn to attrition people (save some clerics)

  5. you can play "slay all evil!" just as well as "slay all!" to jump people

  6. make food/water (less town time, less "hider"-time)

of course, you COULD just gear up in red dragon and attack people relentlessly with a DK. but i fear you'd only learn half of what makes PK great.

I learned to run and pk by playing paladins. DK's are great when it comes to learning how to pk, but you would have a rough time at higher ranks against quite a few classes. Roll a paladin

It doesn't matter too much I think, just get something to 50, anything, and attack anything that moves (barring some rp sanctioned options). People tend not to complain about trash until they start dieing to it, so when people start bitching about your character you'll know that you have learned pk.

Anyways, low exp race/classes tend to be best, give you a much wider field to learn from.

Everybody will give an opinion on what is best, either what they first started learning with, or what someone else has said. In my opinion, whether it is a "good" starter or not doesn't matter if you don't enjoy playing it. Roll something you like the sound of, and more importantly, something you think you will enjoy at pinn. You will learn much more condeathing a character through PKing that you have enjoyed than you willl playing these so called, "Good Starter Classes" to pinn and deleting after a few deaths. Almost every class is a good starter class because a lot of it isn't just learning class skills and what they do, it's getting experience with fighting at pinn, and getting that certain "oomph" that just comes with experience and time. Granted some classes may be harder to play than others but you will learn an awful lot regardless of what you pick.

Just my opinion.

Dey

Paladis are exelent to learn PK defensive skills.

You will have a hard time killing anyone and your battles will be long, giving you the posibility to study good logs and the taticks of your oponents.

Then reverse that to the class you most like.

Evil human cleric(adventurer perk). You'll pinn damn fast.

Did that, became fooder at 50.

Good clerics look more powerfull for me. At least less likely to die.

That's the tradeoff. Good clerics are a little more defensive, evil clerics a little more offensive.

He wants to learn to PK, not to survive.

DK - for sure:

  1. Detect invis castable

  2. Summon for vials

  3. Many weapons - excellent melee

  4. Spells - back up on melee

If you don't go DK at least make sure you pick evil - you will learn far far more.

But the most important thing is to do what Bruce Lee would do. Do whst Muhamad Ali would do. Do what....Pikachu!?!? would do!!

FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT!!!!

Agreed. It's alright finding a class that's "good" for PKing but if you aren't going to go out there and tangle with the big-dogs of PK you won't learn much. Don't be afraid to fight someone who's good at PK just because you don't want to lose your "phat EQ lewt" - go for them with all you've got, because that's what the EQ is there for, and you're going to have a better chance WITH it than without.

I'm not a good PKer at all, but everything I have learnt so far, has been from suiting up, heading after the biggest and the baddest, dying, repeat x10, then finally dropping them, just that once. And even if I don't ever kill them (usually the norm) in my char's lifetime, I still learn TONS. Considering my relatively short playtime compared to some of the other players, I don't think I'm doing too badly.

And, log your battles. Look back. Utilize hindsight.

Further to what Deykari said:

Learn how to get the 'reasoable' eq fast, quick and in a hurry (think what you'd use at lvl 30 - 35 if you had no rares).

That way when you die, you spend 20 min grabbing basics and you're back on the hunt - and don't be afraid to jump someone wearing that, because PK is about know how to fight - its not about being a princess who is dressed all pretty to fight
